Reporting from Ukraine on Tuesday, NPR White House correspondent Scott Detroit noticed a surprising but familiar slogan depicted next to a damaged tank.
“We were going too fast to get a clear picture,” Detroit wrote on Twitter, “but we followed the demolished Russian tank where WOLVERINES was painted.
About half of the post’s commenters recognized the name. The other half asked these curious questions: “What does Wolverine mean? Name of a Ukrainian battalion?
not him.
Generation X and frontline moviegoers or late-night cable moviegoers will recognize the catchy phrase from John Milius’ 1984 popcorn invasion thriller. morning redCast: Patrick Swayze, S. Thomas Howell, Leah Thompson, Charlie Sheen and Jennifer Gray.
In the movie, Russia invades the USA in a covert attack and a group of young people in small towns form resistance. School mascots call themselves “Gluttoners,” a name they spray paint on the pages of destroyed buildings and armor to terrorize Russian troops. Check out the trailer for the movie below.
It is easy to understand why the Ukrainian forces received this name. Like the boys in the movie, they were subjected to an invasion that looked like a downright Russian force and had to resist from its civilian ranks, armed with extremely low firepower but with a strong will to defend their country.
It should be noted that in 2012 a new version of the movie starring Chris Hemsworth appeared, which may actually be more familiar to young people fighting in Ukraine. In this version, however, there was an invading North Korean force. Therefore, the reference to “Wolverines” is probably referring to the 1984 movie, which the Russians were dissident with.
And it turns out that the NPR White House reporter wasn’t the only one who saw the spray-painted tank. Oleg Tolmachev, head of production at Ukrainian oil producer Naftogaz, shared a photo of his battered shell in the comments, saying, “As you know, I smelled it too.
before Tolmachov wrote on twitter Same photo with less funny comments:
“In my car # west of Kiev (geolocation removed). Many tanks and APCs were burned, many industrial and residential buildings were completely destroyed. ”
