Apparently, there is a 90s anime legend that I somehow knew nothing about. In the early 1990s, ToonMakers and Renaissance Atlantic Entertainment (the team behind the original Power Rangers) aimed to make an American version of Sailor Moon who has since been nicknamed Saban Moon. Keep in mind that this was before the DiC dubbing Sailor Moon it was brought to the Western public. Saban Moon was known as a failed project that never aired outside of a short music video at an anime convention. It was believed that was all there was to do. However, YouTuber Ray Mona recently discovered and shared the pilot episode in a two-part series in his Tales of the Lost videos.

What we have learned is that this show is crazy! It was a blend of animation and live-action that is a journey in and of itself, but then the animation seems to be from the 70’s and the acting wasn’t great. I have to say that I like the representation between the characters. However, I am very happy that my introduction to Sailor Moon it wasn’t this project Below I have included both videos for Mona’s documentary project and both sides are worth watching. You can find the pilot at about 1:43:48 of the second video, if you have to jump ahead.
