Go back inside Dungeons & Dragons 4E, there was a condition called Bloodied. Sometimes, monsters or characters would gain access to new abilities or have stat boosts when they became Bloodied. This is a mechanic that Wizards of the Coast removed with the launch of 5E, but Anne Gregersen is bringing it back.
In Bloody and Bruised – Travel through the Radiant Citadel, Gregersen offers new abilities to different creatures that players can encounter while enjoying adventures involving the Radiant Citadel as equals. Plus, the supplement adds a mechanic called Death Throes which is pretty awesome. Basically, it is the idea that sometimes when a character or creature is killed, other effects such as an explosion or a burst of lightning can occur. I love it!
The bugbear leader nurses a bleeding wound to his side before issuing a retreat order to his allies. A bright light forms around the angel’s dying body, blinding everyone close to him as he passes through the world of the living. With blood running down his torso, an enraged hill giant slams his fists into the ground and shakes the earth around him.
Bloodied & Bruised is a series that provides new combat actions for creatures on the 5e roster. When pushed to the limit in combat, these monsters, creatures, demons and enemies gain new abilities that aid them in battle, or perhaps seal their fate depending on the circumstances. Bloodied & Bruised is inspired by the “bloodied” condition of 4e, delivering entirely new combat actions that can completely change the nature of a fight.
Additionally, Bloodied & Bruised also introduces several “spasms of death” to the game, marking the disappearance of some creatures with a large explosion, strong fall or other unique effects to make killing a large monster a truly unique experience.
