Sex scenes must “flow”, according to Sean Bean. Recently this actor, known for his role in “Game of Thrones”, shared an opinion that is proving to be quite controversial. This interpreter wanted to reflect on a relatively new figure in the shoot: that of the ‘intimacy coordinator’, a person in charge of choreographing the sex scenes and making sure none of the participants feel uncomfortable or being forced to do something that has not been agreed in advance.

Bean thinks the presence of such a coordinator spoils the situation “spontaneity”, something to which several actresses responded by taking into account the more complicated scenes. And it is that Bean seems to be referring to the “positive” sexual encounters we see on screen, when coordinators are needed for a much wider range of reasons. Lena Hall, who shared a scene with Bean in “Snowpiercer”, reminded him of this “When an actor / actress has to shoot a scene that is extremely emotional (like being raped), there has to be someone with mental health available to talk to after the shoot. I think intimacy coordinators are a nice addition to sets.”.
For his part, Bean supports him “the natural way of behaving lovers would be ruined if someone reduced it to a technical exercise”but obviously, as Hall adds, “every person, scene and experience is different”. Now Emma Thompson, speaking on the radio show Fitzy & Wippa (via Variety), has joined the debate in defense of the intimacy coordinators, ensuring that they are a figure “incredibly important”.
No, things just don’t flow
Thompson, in full promotion of ‘Good luck, Big Leo’, a film in which her character has a torrid relationship with a man younger than her; she comments that perhaps for Bean, the intimacy coordinators are a “distraction”but that other interpreters may see it very differently.
“Intimacy coordinators are incredibly important, in fact Some will tell you that that figure made them feel comfortable and safe, able to get the job done. So I think they are a fantastic addition to our industry. Y no you can’t just ‘let it flow’. There is a camera and a team. You are not alone in a hotel room, you are surrounded by a group of guys, mostly. So it’s not a comfortable situation, period. “.
