Since the release of the first trailer for the Marilyn Monroe movie blondesome viewers have expressed skepticism in choosing the casting of Ana de Armas like the classic bomb because of its accent. She has Monroe’s scruffy style, but her Cuban accent still peeks out, despite the long, tiring hours of training she took to get her to emulate Monroe’s voice.
But Marilyn Monroe’s estate is defending de Armas in the role, as they believe she captured the essence of Monroe, and that’s more important. Although the film is not licensed by the Monroe estate, Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at ABG, owner of the Marilyn Monroe estate, told Variety:
“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon who transcends generations and history. Any actor who enters that role knows they have great shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s charm, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!
De Armas previously told the London Times that he spent nearly a full year working on his Monroe accent blonde before shooting begins. The actor said: “It took me nine months of dialect coaching, practice and a few ADR sessions [to get the accent right]. It was a great torture, so exhausting. My brain was fried. “
blonde is based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. The drama reinvents Monroe’s life, from her unstable childhood as Norma Jeane to her rise to stardom. The supporting cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Adrian Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Saverio SamueleAnd Evan Williams. The film will debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival and Netflix will open blonde globally on September 28th.
