In the world of comics, Neil Gaiman is one of the industry’s foremost authors, and is now working on the Netflix series “The Sandman”, an adaptation of his work. During SDCC, the author said he proposed to Marvel to make a film about his superheroes, but set in the year 1602.

Throughout his career, Neil Gaiman has written comics for Marvel and DCand just for the house of ideas, there was a series of comics entitled ‘1602’, where the superheroes of the company live in the year of the novel’s title, an idea that had previously been rejected to bring it to the big screen.

At Netflix’s “The Sandman” panel, Neil Gaiman has revealed that he has proposed a film to Marvelwhere they would have made “1602” into an MCU movie, but this idea was rejected by the former incumbent leaders of the company, although he hopes it will still be possible at some point.

Although the idea was rejected years ago, the author of “The Sandman” hopes that Marvel and its new leaders, Kevin Feige and company, are interested in bringing their comic to the big screen. Interestingly, during the Marvel Animation panel at SDCC, it was confirmed that an episode of the series ‘What happens if…?’ for Disney + it would be based on ‘1602’.

What is ‘1602’, Neil Gaiman’s comic for Marvel about?

SDCC attendees were able to confirm that the first episode of the second season of “What if …?” Disney + is inspired by Neil Gaiman’s “1602” comic, although the trailer has not been revealed to the public. And maybe a new spin-off animated series could take place, depending on the success of this one.

On the other hand, “1602” was an 8-issue miniseries written by Neil Gaiman and published by Marvel, in which the superhero universe began four hundred years earlier than the one we know today, mainly set in England, where characters like Stephen Strange , Peter Parquagh, Carlos Javier, among others, go through several historical events.

With only 8 installments, “1602” managed to take the characters of the Marvel universe through different historical moments, all framed by a colonial setting and a drama appropriate to the moment. Let’s see if in the future Kevin Feige’s company resumes, and gives space to this important comic.
