McCall, real name Bill Fries, was in the advertising industry when he created the CW character McCall for the Old Home Bread commercial in 1973. The ad won the Clio Award, and it created a new career for Fris, who took on the persona of an illegal truck driver.
McCall dominated the country music charts from 1974 to 1978. In addition to the #1 pop hit “Convoy” that carried the CB era craze, there will be no “Wolf Creek Pass”, “Old Home Filler-Up and ‘Stay in the Truck’ Cafe”, “Classified”, “Country music (no rock ‘n’ roll) ”) and “Roses for Mom”.
“Conway” was a 1978 film starring Chris Christofferson, Ali McGraw, and Ernest Borgnain.
McCall and advertising partner Chip Davis wrote the hits, Davis wrote the music, and McCall wrote the lyrics and provided the vocals.
McCall was mayor of his hometown of Ouray, CO between 1986 and 1992, while Davis, who founded the Mannheim Steamroller in 1974, found success with this act and became the main venue for the celebration.
The song “Convoy” was recently revived and became the anthem of Canada’s “Convoy of Freedom” to protest the vaccination mission.
McCall is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rena Bonema Fries; three children, Bill Fries III, Mark Fries and Nancy Fries; AND; four grandchildren; Four great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
