‘Don’t look up’ comes true in the UK heatwave TV interview

One of the most commented scenes of “Don’t look up”, the latest film by Adam McKay (“The big bet”, “The vice of power”), was that of the television interview. In it, presenters played by Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry chat with astrophysicists Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence characters about the meteor that will hit the Earth and burn the planet to ashes. Given the nervousness with which scientists express themselves, the presenters play down the issue by not taking it seriously and joking about it.

And it is that, despite wanting to parody today’s society and its small concern for the evils that devastate (or devastate) our world, many of the events depicted in the film have occurred and are occurring continuously: hoaxes through social networks, the indifferent population or the senseless whitewashing of the media or politicians. However, it is still surprising to find scenes similar to those in the film. This time it was the one with the awkward interview.

It happened on a British GBN program, where two hosts interviewed an expert meteorologist about the unbearable heatwave Europe and, in this case in particular, the UK is suffering. Faced with the bad news that the expert comments on the increase in temperature that we will suffer year after year due to climate change, the conductors (as in the film) decide to play down. The meteorologist also talks about the string of deaths this heat will cause, but is interrupted by reporters, who argue that we should be “happy for the good weather”. They also added that meteorologists are “prophets of the apocalypse”.

Reality surpasses fiction

As happened recently with Alexa and her recreation of the voices of deceased relatives (which is strongly reminiscent of “Black Mirror”), reality once again surpasses fiction. The bad news comes when it comes to rather dark, dystopian, or pessimistic fiction such as “Don’t Look Up” and his satire of today’s society.
