I’m pretty excited about the upcoming release of Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema JRR Tolkien anime movies The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. The film is produced by Philippa Boyenswho was part of the writing team for The Lord of the Rings And The Hobbit trilogies, and recently spoke to TheOneRing.net about the film and offered some exciting new details!
The story takes place two centuries before the events of The Hobbit And The Lord of the Rings, and “will explore the exploits of Helm Hammerhand, the king of Rohan, and the creation of Helm’s Deep, the stronghold.” That stronghold was present Peter Jackson’S The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
The film is set 183 years before the events narrated in the original film trilogy. “A sudden attack by Wulf, a cunning and ruthless Lord Dunlending seeking revenge for his father’s death, forces Helm and his people to make one last daring stand in the ancient stronghold of Hornburg, a mighty fortress that it will later become known as Helm’s Deep Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Hera, Helm’s daughter, must evoke the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy bent on their utter destruction.
Brian Cox will provide the voice for Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan, who is a character in the appendix of Tolkien’s book. He joined him Wise Gaia And Miranda Otto, who will reprise the role of Éowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, from the original trilogy. She will serve as the narrator of the tale.
Boyens explained that the film tells a story that is “a very human and political struggle”. He went on to say that the film “is not about the Ring, it is not about the Dark Lord. All this is very marginal with respect to history “.
One of the things she was drawn to in the story was the examination of honor, vengeance and family ties, on both sides. “For Helm, there is a madness born of grief over the loss of the baby. With Wulf there is her relationship with her father and with Héra “.
The story will also include the Dunlendings historical grievances that the lords of Gondor gave what the Dunlendings believed was their land to the Rohirrim.
Boyens goes on to tease a key moment in the film by saying, “And there’s a moment in the film, which is incredibly compelling and powerful where Wulf engages in a line of action he can’t turn his back on. And once he does, the story goes dark. “
The film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus And Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), and regarding that moment in the film, it is explained that it was here that the writers Phoebe Gittins And Arty Papageorgiou really connected with Kamiyama.
He also explained that the film will be both epic and claustrophobic: “So yeah, it starts with these large-scale battles, but it actually gets more intense and … claustrophobic.” And then he revealed that “the nature of the film almost turns into a ghost story”.
He said, “As the siege takes hold, rumors of horror start to spread. And I can give you a little tease and let you know that, even though we said it’s not about the Ring and it’s not about the Lord. Dark … there are the White Mountains and there are the creatures [out there]. “
Boyens then added: “Also, I can just add – and I thought it was, again, really interesting in the way Kamiyama approached this – this has been a long, cold winter that has hurt everyone.”
It all sounds so exciting! There’s a lot more Boyens discussed in the interview, and if you want to read it and get more information and insights into the film, head over to TheOneRing. I really hope they show some footage of this movie at Comic-Con!
Gala wise (A walk in the woods) will play Hera, the daughter of Hammerhand, and Luca Pasqualino (snowdrop) will play Wulf.
