The convocation The franchise has been a wild lap since then James WanThe first film terrified the public in 2013. He kicked off a horror universe that, for better or for worse, lasted nine films.
I blocked myself through the ups and downs, and although not all the revenues were fantastic, there was always a certain ghostly charm that kept me invested. That’s why I was thrilled to see The Conjuring: Last RiteThe final chapter of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s saga.
Unfortunately, instead of a great and chilling mandate, what we get is a disordered and not inspired ending that let me out of the theater feeling frustrated and disappointed.
Set in 1986, the film meets Patrick Wilson AND True femiga Like Warrens, now semi-in pension and feel the weight of age. The worsening of the heart conditions of and makes it more vulnerable than ever, but the couple is attracted to a last obsessive.
Their case this time is based on the notorious family of the Puffo family, where Janet and Jack Sturbl (played by Rebecca Calder AND Elliot Cowan) said their family was tormented by a malicious force.
On paper, the history of real life has all the characteristics of a terrifying rendering of supernatural accounts, but running, Latest rites He fasters almost every step of the route.
The biggest problem is the way the film is lazily written. The screenplay seems to be skacked together, with points of the plot that do not connect and scenes that take place as if they were sewn from completely different drafts.
There are moments that have absolutely no sense in terms of history, configuration or payoff, and the narrative continues to accumulate on random elements without ever engaged in a clear direction. What begins as a infested mystery spirals in something so inconsistent that it is difficult to believe that this should be the grand finale of such a popular series.
And then comes the third act, which is where everything collapses completely. It is chaotic, confused and scarcely staged. Suddenly there are too many characters in the house, then barely to anyone, and you never really know where they are or what they are doing.
The alleged “great bad” demon has just shown. Instead, we stayed with a bizarre sequence that literally ends with the warmen fighting a mirror. I would like to exaggerate, but the ending is ridiculous. It is the type of final that makes you shake your head and ask you what anyone involved was thinking. WAN even read this script!?
Director Michael Chaveswho previously directed The curse of La Llorona AND The Conjuring: the devil made me doIt simply does not have the same finesse or talent that Wan has led to previous films. His style lacks energy and the fears are completely flat.
Instead of building tension, the film constantly launches jump on the screen, each more predictable than the last. Even at over two hours, in some way he feels padded and hurry up, dragging himself through long sections of obtuseness before running through a finale that does not pay anything that is prepared.
The saddest part is that Wilson and Farmiga are still fantastic as E and Lorraine. Their chemistry and emotional depth have always been the glue that keeps this franchise together and also here they do their best to raise the weak material.
You can say they are giving the best, but the film is not good for them. Instead of giving Warrens a real farewell, Latest rites It reduces them to the players in a clumsy and not inspired script that never allows the type of emotional or terrifying moments for which the series is known.
While the film tries to reflect on the inheritance of the Warrens significantly, it takes place as a collection of clichés sewn of clichés, with very little passion or originality behind it. For a franchise that once distinguished itself for having revived the classic horror infested with style and heart, Latest rites Ironically become the type of horror in the generic studio that once climbed over.
Leaving the theater, I couldn’t help but feel upset. I wanted The Conjuring: Last Rite Being a strong and frightening mandate for one of the most successful horror franchises. Instead, it is a disappointing and confused mess that wastes its history, its fears and its characters.
Wilson and Farmiga deserved a much better ending, and so also the fans who stood with this series for over a decade. This is the weakest movie of the franchise
