James Wan It has never been far from SawEven if he only directed the first film. His debut in 2004, written with Leigh WhannellHe transformed a low budget thriller into one of the largest horror franchises of the 2000s.
While Wan continued to build The convocation Universe and direct successes such as AquamanHe remained in contact with Saw as a producer and collaborator of history. Now, two decades later, he is talking about returning in a bigger way now that Blumhouse has acquired the rights.
In a recent interview with Screenrant, Wan admitted that he is still “a little early to talk about it”, but clarified that he has ideas on how to advance the franchise:
“Any updates? Is it a little early to talk about it, but needless to say, it is one that I am very enthusiastic about. Just because I haven’t had much to do with the franchise since the first days.
I guess it’s demanding and exciting because I come back to the film that started my career: my career for me and Leigh Whannell. I do not take it at all slightly, and I absolutely want to find a way for the next film to be respectful of what fans love the franchise, while I find a new audience for this.
It is a 20 -year -old franchise and I think that finding a new start to a certain extent is important, while remaining faithful to the world we have created. “
Saw X.Published in 2023, it was the most revised film in the series and a box office victory, showing that there is still an appetite for the Jigsaw horror brand. The film is skillfully inserted in the time sequence between Saw AND Saw IIgiving John Kramer one last curtain. But the planned follow-up had problems.
Early development on Sead XI went laterally at the beginning of 2024. For a long time Saw Writers Patrick Melton AND Marcus Dunstan He said he completed a draft more than a year ago, but the disagreements between producers and lionsgate blocked the process.
The couple had launched a story with shades of Vito VIfocusing on themes around corruption and health care, but the project was extracted from the Lionsgate release calendar in March.
Wan’s comments suggest that while that version of Sead XI It can be dead, the franchise itself is not over. He is hinting at a “new beginning”, something that could fill the old and the new without discarding the bloody legacy that fans love.
Financially, it makes sense how Saw X. Shown that franchise can still perform. Creatively, however, the challenge will be to give the public something that seems relevant in today’s horror scene. The traps are always shocking, but what he really did Saw He distinguished himself was his twisted game of morality.
If Wan can regain that edge during the update of the themes for the modern public, the franchising could carve out another decade of relevance.
