James Gunn’S Superman It was praised for being faithful to the heart of the character, but a great turning point divided the fans and that Jor-El’s reasons are not as noble as we are used to.
In the film, Lex Luthor discovers a holographic message from Jor-El and Lara-El who reveals a shocking revelation, Kal-El has not been sent to Earth as a beacon of hope.
According to the message, Jor-El meant that his son eventually subjugated the planet and his people. Clark had no idea that it was the case since the complete message was damaged. This is a departure with a classic origin, in which Jor-El’s mission is saving his son, not conquering the world.
The change triggered a lot of online debate and Gunn recently faced the controversy during an interview with Ign, ensuring the fans that the turning point does not betray the fundamental values of Superman:
“I am a big fan of Superman, so first of all I had to trust myself that I was about to honor the pieces of Superman that we had to keep the same. And also to allow me to make changes in which the changes could work and I should not have to go against the integrity of who the character is.
“And so I think it was […] simply facing ourselves to change part of the story in an interesting way for the DCU, but that it was not [something] This went against who Superman was. And it was something with which he was played in the comics first. “
This is not the first time that DC explores the morally gray Kryptonian origins, but seeing it on the big screen was sufficient to turn on a heated discussion among longtime fans.
One of the most surprising elements of the film is Jor-El himself, played by Guardians of the galaxy star Bradley Cooper In a secret cameo. Gunn explained why Cooper was the right solution for the role once made iconic by Marlon Brando and later Russell Crowe:
“I needed someone who could play Jor-El … who had the stature of what we imagine being that character. Someone who could walk in the footsteps of Marlon Brando.”
Whether you love or hate this courageous touch, Gunn is clearly from his vision, confident that the essence of Superman Stay intact. So what do you think? Has this origin added depth to history or has it crossed the line?
