James Gunn He is not trying to reinvent Superman. He is trying to remind us why he first counted.
In a recent episode of serious conversations hosted by Suicide‘S David Dastmalchian Gunn opened on how his imminent Superman The film echoes to 1978 Richard Donner Film that for the first time made sure that the public believed that a man could fly.
“There are some similarities between the original Superman and this Superman. The world was going through an upheaval in the early 70s, and Superman was a return to this brilliant hope and joy in all this. I don’t think it is different from today.”
The 1978 film debuted during a period of national instability with recession, energy crises and unease of the Cold War, and still managed to shed light on warmth and optimism.
Gunn sees today’s world to be in a similar emotional place and wants his Superman (David Corenswet) to feel like the same type of antidote.
Gunn’s version is not a cynical update or deconstruction. It is a return to the foundations of truth, kindness and decency not sorry.
“Sometimes people think that Superman is Pollyanna or old style, and I am like” yes, it is. And that’s okay. “
“It is precisely this practically good guy who believes in those old -fashioned love values and save human life, and being good with each other, be kind, being polite.
“All these things are made fun of today, just as they were a kind of 70s. Yet this is what it represents. So, in a certain sense, it is nervous because it goes against wheat.”
Gunn also stressed that although hope has always been an important part of the myth of Superman, his film aims to put the charm of the character on something even more immediate.
“I think” loving “and” good “is better than” hope “, because hope is a certain thing about the future. There is hope there, for sure, but I really think it is much more about the fact that Superman is kind and that is fine. Because many people are not.”
To the question on which in the end wants the public to move away, Gunn has not made a great discourse on inheritance or tradition. Instead, he described something small, simple and incredibly human:
“You know that feeling, and I’m sure people out there know, that magical feeling you feel when you leave a good movie.
“The high one you feel, and you love the person you are a little more than I loved them when you entered it.
“Whether it’s your friend or mother, wife, husband or child. So it’s what I want. I want people to come out like this.”
So no, Superman will not be dark, gritty or “reinvented cupmente”. It aims to be something much more radical … confident, heard and … perhaps even healing.
And in a world that could really use a friend, perhaps it is exactly the superman we need.
