I was enthusiastic about James Gunn’S SupermanBut I didn’t expect the film to hit me as it did. I walked thinking that I would have a decent kick -off at the DCU of Gunn, and I was convinced that I had seen one of the most creative, emotionally rooted and direct superhero films.
Gunn infused this film with that strange, wild and rebellious spirit for which it is known. This is not a film that tries to copy what happened before. This is Gunn who throws the regulation in the sun and builds something new with the kind of superheroes. He thought out of the box while he was on this, and he worked totally for me.
This thing screams punk rock! Not in the way the leather jacket and the Mohawk, but in the way he challenges the structure of superheroes formulated and refined that we have seen a million times. He is safe, vibrant and without fear of becoming strange and being unique.
The construction of the world of Gunn is alive and full of personality, full of playful energy, yet it still leaves room for a real emotional depth. The tone looks like a balance between serious hope and chaotic irreverence, and the landing is totally attacked.
David Corenswet He crushed him like Clark Kent/Superman. I admit it, I was skeptical when it was announced for the first time. He had his gaze, of course, but did he have the thing? It turns out, it does so.
Bring this quiet nobility to the role, not only because it is powerful, but because it worries. This is what struck me. His Superman is not a God who looks down, he is someone who tries to be the best of both worlds: Kryptonian and human. This is the core of the film.
His scenes with Lois (played brilliantly from Rachel Brosnahan) Having this ventilated and rowing rhythm that seems really fun. Simply click. And Krypt is an MVP. Every moment with him is gold. That poor dog rules!
As far as this is Superman’s film, Gunn ensures that the pops support cast. Yes, there are many characters, but it never seems overcrowded. Mr. Terrific brings this dry and impassive humor that broke me every time.
Green lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) Make solid impressions and I would seriously like that we had more metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), has that strange and tragic energy that really excavates. It is also hoped that he has Powers Rad that has more time in sequels.
The gang of justice is Ragtag’s troupe of colorful heroes, who has chosen to fight for something, and their relationship with Superman does for some moments.
Now let’s talk about Lex Luthor. Nicholas Hault It’s perfect. His opinion on Lex is chilling and dark. There is this subtle resentment under all he does and his dynamic with Superman is very personal. It is not just a villain because he hates aliens, he sees Superman as a threat to the world he wants to build.
The way he tries to dismantle Superman’s image is really intelligent. It is not all the brute force, it is also calculated, manipulative. I liked to look at their step forward and forth, because it seemed two visions of the world who collide more than two guys who were punching.
The action is Aweosme and enormous moments that are pure chaos of comics. It is fast, elegant and Gunn tilts into the pulp of everything. Feel the fists, but I was smiling from one ear to the other because of how far mouthpieces and imaginative everything is.
The thing that really blocked me, however, was the heart. There is this short moment that struck me between Clark and his father, Jonathan Kent who … struck me. No irony, no wins, just a real and vulnerable conversation that was full of emotions. The one through emotional gives the movie weight.
People will have opinions on this. Some will say that it is too strange, too foolish, not “serious” enough, and that’s okay. But for me? This is exactly what I wanted. A film by Superman who embraces hope, who dares to be crazy, who makes room for action, comedy, heart and, above all, joy.
He reminded me because I love superhero stories in the first place. Not because they are perfect, but because they show us how we can be better. Gunn has not just relaunched the DCU with Superman, he has rekindled the genre.
