Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World could have brought Tim Blake NelsonSamuel Sterns aka The leader returns to the big screen after a wait of 15 years, but his return was landed with a thud.
Now, thanks to the artbook collector, we are taking a look at what could have been, and almost every version of the leader left on the floor of the cutting room seems more interesting than what has arrived in the film.
The new concept art shows a wide range of alternative design for Sterns, some that lean strong on the roots of the comics with large green heads and an evil touch, and others who … well, go totally from the rails.
A version has a grotesque mouth, similar to a xenomorphic that will open from its changed skull, directly from a nightmare. Another plays with the horror elements of the body, transforming the leader into something closer to a creation of Cronenberg than to a traditional MCU Baddie.
These drawings came from an deliberated effort to push the character into a more memorable territory. Concept artT Ian Joyner He explained his approach focused on the creature:
“My favorite stuff is creature’s work. One of my favorite films is the thing. So every time I can play in that world, I enjoy a lot.
“We do not necessarily want to lean on the horror of the complete body, but I was happy with the most recent interpretation of the leader’s comics in the immortal Hulk Run-Ove literally absorbs the brain, intelligence and souls of people.
“My idea was, how, could we really do something so crazy? I was considering that the leader could be able to control the minds with his brain and even suck the brain from other people.”
That type of madness clearly did not survive the filming. According to reports, Marvel softened the Poppe to make it less a threatening mind and more a tragic figure. The final result? A zombied, brain -shaped thing … that some fans think has missed the sign.
It is difficult not to feel like New brave world He left a more interesting version of his villain on the table. These conceptual pieces make fun of a version of the leader who could have been disturbing. Instead, we had a mutate and confused grip that did not capitalize the potential Nelson brought to the role in the incredible Hulk.
