The global popularity of souls is at the historic highs, but not all in the sector are enthusiastic about how Hollywood is jumping on the cart, especially when souls are seen less as an art form and more as a hack of economic content.
In a recent event Machi Asabi in Japan, founder of Comixwave Films Noritaka Kawaguchiknown for having produced many of Makoto Shinkaifilm and My onishiThe head of foreign affairs of the study opened on their frustrations with western studies trying to transform everything into souls. Kawaguchi said:
“There are some too many jobs to check. I have to look at the Japanese souls and I must also read [Shonen] Jump. ”
Between the continuous growth catalog of local souls and a flood of adaptations from the main franchises such as Star Wars, Scott PilgrimAND The Lord of the RingsExpert producers also feel overwhelmed.
Onishi added:
“That’s right … that’s why it is not a good idea to animate everything. The anime is just a method, not a genre. In fact, what I hate in these days is that when I talk to people in Hollywood, they ask me:” Can’t you do like an anime? “What is behind this is something like:” It is cheap if it is an anime “, which really pisses me off”.
Onishi shared a real exchange with a Hollywood manager: “He would have cost 20 billion yen to make a live movie, so you can’t make it an anime?”
He derived the request. The hypothesis that anime is only an economic and faster alternative completely ignores art, work and cultural context that also produce a single frame.
Hollywood’s recent anime obsession is not unprecedented. Star Wars: Visionon On Disney+ it was a high profile attempt to give the distant galaxy, far an anime turning point. WB’s The Rohirrim warset in the Half Terra, he did the same for The Lord of the Rings.
These projects are only the beginning, with western studios anxious to replicate the traditional success of successes such as Demon Slayer AND Attack in Titan.
But while some collaborations have been respectful and creatively exciting, others feel more like a shortcut or an agricultural approach of content to a means that deserves better. And the people who actually do anime? They are starting to reject.
