James Gunn’S Superman can borrow a page from Richard Donner’s 1978 Classic, but he is giving us a new dynamic, especially when it comes to the heart of history … Lois and Clark.
In the original Superman: the film, Christopher ReeveSuperman e Margot KidderLois Lane shares an interview on the iconic roof in which the journalist questions the hero covered on his height, hometown and mission, “fight for truth and justice and the American street”, all without realizing his embarrassing colleague Clark Kent is the man who floats just above his window.
The entire dynamic “Don’t know his Superman” was thrown out of the window in Gunn’s film. Its version presents us with a very different Lois and Clark, in which the boss is optional and the truth is already out.
This time, Clark (David Corenswet) sits for an interview with Lois (Rachel Brosnahan) Like Superman, yes, but she already knows exactly who is talking to. They are not hiding secrets. I am in the middle of it.
Corenswet said Entertainment Weekly:
“It is not like the interview in Donner’s film in which Lois does not know that he is Clark. Lois knows everything about him, so he is in a very vulnerable position. He is madly in love with this woman and desperately wants that she understands and appreciated him and loves him.”
That vulnerability launches the dynamic on his head. It is no longer a question of the thrill of the discovery, it is about emotional honesty and in this story, the relationship is already in motion when we meet them. They were together for about three months. Brosnahan explained:
“What is the point in a relationship in which you are like, it was really a great elimination or is it more serious, perhaps forever? Is one of the things I love of their love story. While they have visions of the totally opposite world, they complete and need each other.”
Gunn and the cast seem to embrace the roots of Donner Classic while making room for something more emotionally evolved. Brosnahan drew Gunn’s attention to show Lois in action, both on the ground and, literally, in the sky that piloted the sphere T of Mister Terrific together with Perry White (Wendell Pierce) and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo). Brosnahan said:
“I think that, at that moment, you see an opportunity for a front page story. I really appreciated that James makes room to see her in action at the height of his journalistic ability.”
The new Superman He is clearly embracing his world of comics in an unwindled way. When the film begins, Superman He is already an active player in a wider superhero ecosystem, fighting in international conflicts such as Boravia vs. Jarhanpur, and exchanging titles with supercipes such as metal, which Lois and Clark were covering when they met.
As for the casting for the film, actors like it Tom Brittney AND Nicholas Hault They were considered to be for Superman before Hoult finally landed Lex Luthor. Phoebe Dynevor AND Emma Mackey Tested for Lois. But in the end, it was the elusive chemical. Gunn said:
“We mixed and combined with these different actors and actresses to discover not only who was the best Clark and who was the best Lois, but who was the best” Clois “, who was the best together. I think David was the best Clark, Rachel was the best Lois, but they also had more chemistry together.”
While Gunn’s socket feels modern, the roots are still profound. THE John Williams-The style score. The brilliant optimism. Brosnahan’s personal connection also brings it to the starting point. She added:
“My father was a great Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Superman fan, and I feel like showing me that film when I was about 12 years old. So it was the final superman for me, even if it was long before my time.”
This Superman may not hide behind the glasses anymore, but he still wears his heart on the sleeve.
