George Romero’s daughter, Tina, talks about Queens of the Dead: a great gay tribute, stuffed with blood to the legacy of her father

Tina Romero He is passing behind the camera for his debut in directing and is not moving away from the legacy of the family. His first feature film, Queens of the DeadIt is intended for the Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 7 and yes, it is a zombie film.

But this march towards the rhythm of a drag show of the queer warehouse, not the slow shuffle of the corpses that wander the shopping center. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, referring to his deceased father, George A. Romerohe said:

“I am his son. There is no denying him. And he influenced me a lot. And this is his monster, this is his kind. I had fun making my little hints of Romero during the film, and we have some good ones.”

He is entering the sandbox built by his father, adding some glittern bombs. He also called horror icons to drop like Tom Savini AND Dawn of the Dead‘S Gaylen Ross who present themselves in the film.

Queens of the Dead It is a love letter to horror, the queer culture and the rebellious spirit of independent cinema. Set in the course of a chaotic night in the scene of the Queer Festival, the story takes place in a drama show just as Zombi’s apocalypse starts.

Romero, who spent time at DJ in these exact types of spaces, found inspiration in an online feud among the promoters of the parties.

“The original promoter published this manifesto by imposing the question:” When does the Queer community stop devouring its own? “And he struck me like lightning.

Romero is relying on this concept without losing his sense of humor or his sharpness. He continued to explain:

“Zombi’s apocalypse is such a rich sandbox to play when it comes to social comments. I can’t be my father’s daughter without trying to say something with the zombies.

“I wanted this to be a film in which I am paying homage to the world and the monster he created, but I am also introducing my voice. It is not a film he would make, but he is using his vocabulary and is playing according to his rules.”

It is also a film that centers in a non -apologetic way the queer voices in horror, that something that Tina has felt had been expected for some time.

“As for the queer element, on the one hand, I feel only as gays need a zombie movie. It is time that we can have a great movie of gay zombies.”

There is also a small note at the bottom of the production qualifications: a special thanks to Tom Cruise. Katy O’Brienwhich is better known for the duty of the bad guys in The Mandalorianstars as promoter without frills of the drag show and, according to reports, Cruise allowed her to carve out time from the shooting Mission: Impossible to film Queens of the Dead.

While George Romero has never read the end of the screenplay, he encouraged Tina to chase the idea when he launched it for the first time.

“He said,” I love him! Run with it. Try it. “Unfortunately, he never had the opportunity to read the script completed because it took me about seven years to develop it … but I had this blessing.”

Tina Romero is not trying to replicate her father’s work, he is remixing him for a new generation. With queen queen, zombie carnage and a lot of heart.
