If there is one thing George RR Martin It has no time for, in addition to writing The winds of winterThese are the screenwriters who rewrite the same stories that made them want to adapt the work in the first place.
During a recent event with the fantasy author’s colleague author Joe AbercrombieMartin opened on what really frustrates him for the adaptation process, saying:
“The television and the film are ultimately collaborative. You always have the director and the actors and, of course, the study will have managers, they will give notes and all this, and you will have to face all this, that some people do better than others.”
But then he cut at the center of his rant.
“The difficult part of the collaboration is not so much, but, I find – speak only for myself here, not for Joe – has to do with the other writers.
“They are adapting your book or your story, and they take someone else to do it, and there is a phrase that allows this writer of – Okay, take the great Gatsby, but make it yours. And I don’t want anyone to do their Gatsby.”
This must have weighed on Martin’s mind for a while. He continued to say:
“I think I could be a minority in this case here that other people don’t care and everything, but I don’t believe in most cases where a Hollywood screenwriter does something of them who improves it. [in] Most cases are the opposite. “
Martin’s comments do not come out of nowhere. Previously he expressed concern for HBO Dragon house Deviating from his book Fire and bloodAt a certain point by publishing on his blog:
“There are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if House of the Dragon proceeds with some of the changes that are contemplated for seasons 3 and 4 …”
It is a family tension: writers who create worldwide complexes often see those worlds or stories remodeled and rewritten when they enter the Hollywood mashine. Is adaptation one thing, but transforming someone else’s work into a sandbox for your ideas is not collaboration? Martin is not a fan.
