Isabela Merced Your typical superhero is not playing James Gunn’S Superman. His version of Hawkgirl, aka Kendra Saunders, is equipped with centuries of emotional background. These new details we have learned are actually really fantastic.
Speaking on the official podcast of the DC Studios Showcase, Merced revealed that his character is the reincarnated spirit of Thaanegarian Shayera Hol, a legacy imbued with tragedy and infinite rebirth, and Kendra remembers everything. Merced explained:
“Kendra is reincarnate by an alien. So, it has all those memories. The story is actually really dark, it is thus made that I wonder how they will manage it when it comes to dealing with it.
“I think he brings all the memories, trauma and mistakes of his life spent in his body, wherever he goes, so he has a little grumpy behavior.”
This is a very interesting direction to take the character, and leans on the twisted myth that has long defined Hawkgirl in the comics. Whether it’s Sanders, Shayera Hol or Kendra Saunders, Hawkgirl’s story has always been a mix of love, loss and reincarnation. But unlike some iterations in which the character is blessedly unaware of his past, Kendra of Merced fully recalls trauma.
“Honestly, it gives me so much background and is very useful. But then you also have the touch of James Gunn, that self -awareness and the comedy of everything. It gives me the opportunity to shed light on my trauma and that’s what I always do.”
The “grumpy behavior” of which he spoke is the weight of the lives that echo at all times, and this adapts perfectly to the distinctive mixture of Gunn of dark themes and irreverent humor.
While Merced’s Hawkgirl is not the central character of the film, his presence shows that Gunn is having with the construction of the world.
David Corenswet stars like the man of steel, alongside Rachel Brosnahan Like Lois Lane e Nicholas Hault Like a very bald lex luthor.
