By now, fans are still recovering from the news that George WendtThe man who made Norm Peterson a family name died at 76. For fans of GreetingsIt is a punch for the intestine and for those who knew him better, it is a deeply personal loss.
Taxes from his Greetings The cast companions paint a portrait of a man who was equally warm, fun and loved out of the screen as he was.
TED DANSONwho played the bartender Sam Malone during the series, he said:
“I am devastated in feeling that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and children. It will take me a long time to get used to me. I love you, Georgie.”
John Ratzenbergerwho sat next to Wendt at the bar like the always open mailman Cliff Clavin, recalled the real bond they shared:
“For 11 years on Cheers, we shared a stage, many laughter and a front row place to one of the most loved friendships of television. George gave birth to Norm with a subtle splendor-the type that made him easy. It was his gift.
“It was a true craftsman – humble, fun and full of heart. What you saw on the screen was exactly those who were out of the screen with an impeccable comic time and a profound loyalty towards those he loved.
“I will miss our conversations and quiet moments of friendship that meant the most. My thoughts are with his wife Bernadette, their children and all those who loved him.”
Rhea Perlmanwho played Carla Tortelli, recalled his frequent scenes next to the favorite stool of Norm:
“George Wendt was the sweetest and kinder man I have ever met. It was impossible not to appreciate him. Like Carla, I was often standing next to him, since Norm always took the same place at the end of the bar, which made him easy to grab him and beat his shit at least once a week.
“I liked it and loved to pretend that he didn’t hurt. What a boy! I will miss more than words can say.”
NBC, the network that aired Greetings For over a decade, he also shared a sincere message:
“Looking at him cross that door and head towards his stool, America could not wait to greet every Thursday evening.
“George Wendt was an essential part of the applause genius and we will miss the millions that loved him. Norm was all of us. A normal boy who finished his laborious day who wanted to be surrounded by friends and a freezing drink. We are proud to lift a glass and toast to a real legend of the comedy.”
Even outside the Greetings Family, Wendt left a lasting impression. Actress Melissa Joan Hartwho worked with him Sabrina the adolescent witchShared on Instagram:
“Paradise has just become a little more fun with George Wendt. It was a shiver to work next to him on Sabrina The Teenage Witch for a handful of episodes.
“I was a big fan of Cheers and I knew I was among the best when he was on set. It was warm, professional and kind and our cast and our crew were equipped with his presence every time. Rest in peace!”
George Wendt appeared in all 273 episodes of Greetingsearning six nominations from consecutive Emmy along the road. But above all, it was the heavy heart of a show that made people feel and welcome feel.
In a world full of complicated characters, Norm was just a simple boy who wanted a cold beer, a small conversation and a place in a bar where everyone knew his name.
