When the casting was announced for the first time for Marvel Thunderbolts*We saw that most of the main players were the MCU veterans who had been in at least another film, many of which are several projects, except for one.
Steven Yeun (Deaths walking, Beef) He was ready to interpret the newcomer, Bob, who turned out to be the character of the Sentry. Unfortunately, due to the strikes a couple of years ago, this made a mess with many filming programs and Yeun had to abandon the role because of other commitments.
In a recent interview with the director of the film, Jake SchreierHe spoke of the last minute confusion process to find a suitable replacement actor to take on the mysterious role.
Schreier explained to the New York Times:
“I think the most difficult part whether they can’t read a script. It is a big leap for any actor to do. I met Lewis in Los Angeles and we were climbing because I think maybe we were perhaps a month at that point.
“Basically I gave him the oral history of Thunderbolts because I was not allowed to give him the script, but it is like:” I will tell you the whole story, I will show you the concept art, I will show you the soul “. I just tried to show him how interesting the character could be and because it would be worth making that jump”.
He continued:
“These things are so secret. Furthermore, I think there is this trust that we will enter there and understand it together. Something Kevin [Feige] He always talks about which you can never enter a Marvel meeting at any time and say: “I think we’re done, I think it is so”.
“It’s always,” Okay. Here’s how we think we can improve it. “Lewis had absolutely to be part of the development and he and Florence worked on the scenes.
I was looking forward to seeing Yeun in the MCU, but Pullman did a fantastic job and I loved what he led to the character. We hope that Yeun will be able to play another role in the future.
Schreier continued saying that he was “worried” in bringing Bob to such dark places, but he praised Marvel Studios and Feige to “push me towards making him different from what they had done”.
“If you have a sentry and emptiness [the Sentry’s villainous alter ego] In your movie, you will have to go there. We talked to Paul Jenkins, who created the character, and has always been a parable for mental health.
“In addition, it is extraordinarily overwhelmed and his only Kryptonite is that there is this empty side for him. If you intend to make a film that works with that character in it, he will have a certain internal conflict that works and the external conflict,” concluded the director.
The sentinel will return Avengers: Doomsdaydestined to hit the cinemas on May 1, 2026, together with his new Avengers companions.
