A cartoon man is located at his cubicle desk and sets a computer with a blue screen indicating that he is updating.
This month, Optillusion Games published their last video game puzzle, While waiting. The game is now available for PC and Nintendo Switch with an $ 19.99 MSRP. The team was kind enough to provide me with a review code, but all thoughts are mine.
Told through an artistic presentation in a unique comic style that brings every special moment to the hilarious life, while waiting for everything … waiting – waiting to be born, waiting for the suitcase at the airport, waiting for that bathroom stall during a Gastrointestinal emergency, and also wait for traffic.
Wait while the moments of life pass and beat the game or take control of your destiny and explore the 100 different scenarios of the game and discover hilarious, touching and decidedly bizarre ways to transform the game waiting in much more.
I want to start sharing it While waiting It is not a game for everyone. I take on the role of Adam for his whole life (and beyond). Each level (100 in total) is more or less on a timer as you have to wait for a declared event to occur, how to wait for the bus, but there are different ways of waiting. Each level can be completed literally by doing anything.
The game took me about five hours to be completed, so if this is your approach you can think of it as about 2-3 movies. However, each level also has different things you can do while aspecting specific goals that unlocks stickers (basically game results). These include things like helping your daughter to get a mystical sword from a stone hidden to King Arthur.
If I am honest, I feel like the trailer does not do a good job in showing what you do in the game. I saw it a few times before playing and did not help me understand what to expect from the game.
I’ll be completely honest, I didn’t care While waiting. I bored myself halfway and the last times I went up to finish it seemed to me of such a job. My wife even asked me once if I really needed to play more and I explained that I would simply be because I knew I was close to the end. So where are the Optilllusion games go?
The number one place where they went badly was that the game is simply clumsy to play. You essentially have four checks: movement, interact, menu and agitation. The idget revolves between some options such as a spinner, a button and a switch and literally it is literally needed to anyone if not to give you a button to press while you do nothing and serves for this purpose.
The movement overall is not even that bad, until it is just moving your character. There are times when you interact with something and the perspective changes in a first -person perspective and you start to control your hand and those feel clumsy, especially because it is difficult to know if your finger is in the right position to interact with it when yes press that button.
I think the idea behind While waiting It is to promote “to make the most of life” not only waiting for life to pass you. If I am right, this is not always a good message to share. The way my ADHD brain works, I constantly try to do things while I wait “don’t waste time”. Something I learned is that I have to be better in slowing down and only to be at the moment and wait for things.
Now, perhaps this is the real idea behind the game because you can choose to do nothing on certain levels. Unfortunately, While waiting It is a game and this means that I have integrated expectations. This could be to experience a story, to engage in a fun and stimulating gameplay, enjoying a moment with friends, etc. When trying to make that break and slowing down by completing the levels by doing nothing, it seems only a waste of time (the antithesis to what the game seems to want).
I don’t know anyone who likes to start a game and then sit there. Furthermore, it does not help that your actions have no consequences. Whether you do something or nothing, Adam will eventually move on to the next level and everything will be the same regardless of your past choices.
Another problem I have with the game is that on subsequent boots, there is no continuous option. The reproduction button is automatically highlighted and if you press the one thinking that it will resume where you interrupted, you are wrong. The game begins.
To collect where you interrupted from, you have to go to the levels and therefore you can select any level you have already started. It is a small thing, but really annoying and easy to start again accidentally (requiring to wait a few minutes to access the menu and stop so you can return to the main menu) instead of gathering where you interrupted.
Now, having said that, I like the artistic style. It is a style very similar to a comic and this can be pleasant without complaints. Furthermore, it is not intense and has incredibly low system requirements, which means that you can play on anything.
Or I didn’t take the view behind While waitingOr is it scarcely implemented (or maybe both?). After 30 minutes I finished with the game and I continued for this review, but I found myself extremely bored and looking for things to do while I was waiting for the levels to be completed or that I would have enough energy to worry about playing some levels .
I am sure there are people who will appreciate this game (he has many positive evaluations on Steam), but clearly I was not one of these. In short, it ends up feeling like a good Dolls song (if you know, you know).
