The long-awaited second season of Apple TV+’s psychological thriller series is just a week away, Separationand the creator of the show, Dan Ericksonhe’s teasing what we can expect when we return, as well as his vision for the end of the show.
During a recent interview with io9/Gizmodo, Erickson was asked if he knows how the show will end up telling his story, and he explained:
“I have a pretty solid idea of the end point of the show. I have kind of an ending scene that’s always been in my head that answers some of the big questions.
“I think you have to know them to know the rules of the world you’re writing. But I also think it’s balanced because I also like to be surprised by the show.
“Sometimes we’ll meet a new character or find a new location or a new element of the show that I’m surprised to find myself falling in love with and suddenly it’s like, ‘Well, now it has to be a part of it.
“We can’t leave everything there. We have to make it part of a bigger story.” And that’s where the fun comes in. You have to think on your feet a little and let the show surprise you.
This show does nothing but surprise me and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Speaking about what happens next, Erickson also talked about why they decided to dive straight into the drama in Season 2, Episode 1, with exposition-filled conversations between the main characters.
When asked whether this was done because of the long break between seasons or because it was always the plan, the show’s creator explained:
“It was always going to be that way. Partly there was so much going on at the end of the first season, and it really shook up the status quo for everyone, there was a danger of it getting convoluted and confusing and being like, ‘Okay, who knows what?’
“So we wanted to put everything on the table. That’s why, on the outside, characters quickly start conversations with each other like, “Okay, what the hell happened? What was this? What did that mean?”
“And then inside it’s the same thing. In the trailer, Dylan (Zach Cherry) directly asks the question “What did you see up there?” Narratively it felt like the right thing to do and it also felt true to the characters.
“All these people are going to be desperately trying to figure out what the hell just happened and what it means for them, so let’s just let them have those conversations organically.”
It is logical that we find them this way. The laid-off Lumon employees just went on a little excursion to discover their “outies” and have a lot of questions.
I just rewatched the first season (which I highly recommend) and can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes us.
Separation season two will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, February 17.
