Digital Eclipse was launched in December Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita Rewind. This video game is a colorful side-scrolling beat ’em up, similar to classic arcade games. It launched on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4/5, and Xbox consoles with an MSRP of $34.99. The Digital Eclipse team was kind enough to provide me with a review code for the Nintendo Switch, but all thoughts below are my own.
In case you missed it, I’m huge Power Rangers fan and so I was thrilled when Rita’s rewind was announced. I’m still waiting for a fighting game similar to the classic Power Rangers game for SEGA Game Gear, but I’ll be patient.
Before I dive too deep into my thoughts, I want to clarify a few facts. If you play on PlayStation, you are limited to 4-player couch co-op while all other platforms support 6-player couch co-op.
If you want to play online, Xbox players can have up to six players across two consoles, and PlayStation and PC support 2-player co-op. The team is working to expand online play with the feature on Switch expected “early in the new year” as the update awaits approval from Nintendo.
Cross-gen play (PS4 and PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S) is available, but cross-platform play is not. Lastly, the game isn’t overly long and should only take most people a few hours to complete.
Let’s start by talking about what Rita’s rewind he was right in my opinion. Having the ability to have up to six players is always a win in my opinion.
Unfortunately I don’t have many friends nearby willing to play this game with me, but a guy can dream. Secondly, there are various filters you can apply if you want a more retro aesthetic. I kind of liked 720p, but my wife felt she couldn’t see anything if any of the filters were on and so it’s definitely a matter of personal taste.
Also, the story is short and really nothing special, but it is a bit unique in that it uses Robo Rita’s Once and always special time travel and throw things like the evil Green Ranger along with other monsters The mighty Morphine fans will recognize him.
Plus, there are fun collectibles to collect (there’s got to be some reason to replay levels, right?) that reference other monsters from the beloved series, and you can rescue NPCs like Mrs. Appleby and Marge (big points if you do). know who he is without looking for him).
One of the biggest strengths (though not perfect) of Rita’s rewind is that there are essentially three different game modes that you’ll switch between as you progress through the story.
Mostly you’ll be a Ranger doing the good old fighting game. You beat various Putty Patrollers, Tenga Warriors, and more to progress.
Then, you’ll have to hop into your Zord for a Star Fox-like on-rails shooter experience. Finally, the Zords combine to form the Megazord for an experience much like a first-person Punch-Out!!. Each of these has its strengths and weaknesses, but I like the variety.
Unfortunately, Rita’s rewind he has problems. Thankfully, a good number of complaints I received were improved in the update released on December 24th for Nintendo Switch.
If it weren’t for that update, this game would honestly have a much lower rating. I also have faith that the Digital Eclipse team will continue to make improvements to the game as they progress and work to implement their goals online.
My first complaint is that the Rangers are all cookie cutter characters. There is literally no reason to choose one over another, except that you like that color better. While this helps fans choose their favorite Ranger without worrying that it doesn’t match the player’s playstyle, I feel it makes the game feel a lot more shallow than it could be.
There isn’t even a simple leveling system like the one in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge that rewards sticking with a given character with more health, more special gauge, etc. The Zords are also essentially the same with the exception of the Pterydactyl Zord which is really overpowered because it flies and therefore automatically avoids holes and debris in the ground.
Another big complaint is that the Megazord sequences are frustrating. It basically boils down to moving sideways to avoid the enemy’s attacks and when you manage to get close enough you try to hit him.
The side dodge is very swingy and so it’s incredibly easy to accidentally switch from side to side instead of returning to the center for the attack. Additionally, if you get hit, the monster retreats, requiring you to approach the monster again to attempt to beat it.
It all gets frustrating, especially if you’re dodging bullets and then the monster summons a projectile as you go to punch them and then everything resets. This is especially frustrating when playing with younger players. On the plus side, I don’t think it’s possible to lose during the Megazord phase and it switches between players after every three hits or so.
At the end of the day, Rita’s rewind It’s not a bad game but I was disappointed with it. First, I’m always sad whenever crossplay isn’t a feature. Secondly, the lack of individualism between the characters and any kind of leveling up or upgrades is just bad in a modern context.
Third, while the December 24th update (previously for other platforms) was a godsend and took the game from terrible to decent, I hope the team continues to make changes to improve the game. There’s a really cute skeleton but maybe leg day was skipped too many times.
