When Alien: Romulus released in theaters last summer, it reignited the franchise’s sci-fi-horror legacy because it was so awesome!
Director Fede Alvarez has made a visceral film, set between Alien AND Aliensmixing the terror of Ridley Scottis original with the action-packed intensity of James Cameronthe sequel.
It also paid homage to elements of Prometheus AND Alien: Resurrectionmaking it a love letter to the franchise, and it worked!
But let’s talk about the Xenomorph in the room. One aspect of the film sparked some debate among fans, and that was the return of Ian Holm’s likeness for the android character Rook.
Holm, who played Ash in the original 1979 film, was brought back through a mix of animatronics and CGI with the blessing of his estate. Unfortunately, the result on screen was the only thing that bothered me about the film. The CGI wasn’t as comparable to Calibur as it should have been
In a recent interview with Empire, Alvarez spoke about the hasty CGI that went into the film version, saying:
“We just ran out of time in post-production to get it right. I wasn’t 100% satisfied with some shots, where you could feel the intervention of the CG a little more. So, I don’t blame people who react negatively.”
Alvarez ended up convincing the studio to give Rook the review it deserved for the home release and say the problem had been fixed. He said:
“We have solved the problem. We’ve improved things for release right now. I convinced the studio that we need to spend the money and make sure we give the companies involved in making it the right amount of time to finish it and do it well. It’s much better.”
Alvarez explained it Shane Mahanan animatronics wizard, created an intricate puppet of Holm’s face using a cast of his head The Lord of the Rings. While the theatrical cut relied more on CGI, the home version redresses the balance by going back to animatronic.
Alvarez said: “What we did [for the home entertainment version] he was much more back to the puppet. It’s much better.”
These CGI issues didn’t stop the film from hitting the top of my list of favorite films of 2024, but I’m happy to hear that they fixed this issue!
