Cilian Murphy he won’t show up 28 years later despite reports that he would be joining the film. However, according to the manufacturer Andrew MacDonaldwe may still see Murphy’s iconic character Jim in the franchise’s future.
MacDonald revealed to Empire: “[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He won’t be in the first movie, but I hope there will be some Jim somewhere along the way.”
“He is currently involved as an executive producer and I hope we can work with him in some capacity in the future on the trilogy.”
After the first trailer for the film was released, some fans ridiculously thought that a zombie that appeared was Murphy, the director Danny Boyle debunked the claim that the zombie was actually played by aspiring actor Angus Neill, not Murphy.
Boyle said: “I showed the trailer to my girlfriend and she said: ‘People will think that’s Cillian. I said, “Don’t be silly.” I ignored her. So I’ve been eating some humble pie ever since.”
The highly anticipated sequel takes center stage Jodie Comer AND Aaron Taylor-Johnson as survivors living on a remote island, far from the infected. Their uneasy peace is shattered when they return to the mainland, facing the horrors of a resurgent Rage Virus.
The official synopsis teases: “Some time after the events of 28 weeks laterthe Rage Virus has returned and a group of survivors must endure a world ravaged by hordes of infected.
Joining the cast are Jack O’Connell, Erin KellymanAND Ralph Fiennes. Fiennes described the emotional core of the film in a recent interview, saying:
“Britain has been in this terrible plague of infected people for 28 years… It centers on a boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. The drive through this beautiful land in the north of England, but obviously the infected are lurking everywhere.”
28 years later is the first of a planned trilogy, with the first and second installments already filmed. Boyle returned to direct the opening chapter, while Nia Da Costa (Candyman, The Wonders) directs the sequel.
The creative team uses the iPhone 15 Pro Max with specialized accessories for parts of the shoot.
28 years later will hit theaters on June 20, 2025. Will the future of the franchise bring Jim back into the fold? Only time, and perhaps the infected, will tell.
