We haven’t heard much about it Superman star David Corenswet as director James GunnThe film is in development. But, in a recent interview with Collider, the actor talked about taking on the roles of Superman and Clark Kent and how he prepared for them.
The actor reflected on how he approached not only Superman, but also the equally important role of Clark Kent, and while he wasn’t versed in comics when he was cast in the film, he dove into them to help him understand how wanted to bring this version of the hero to life.
Corenswet explained: “James suggested reading All-Star Superman for Clark, in particular, because there are interesting challenges with Clark. It was interesting to have a silent version to watch.
“I haven’t read that many Superman comics after all the different Clarks that have appeared in the comics. I knew the ones that had appeared on television and in films, but it was great to have a silent one and get an impression of it.
“So I got a lot out of that, especially for Clark. I also stole some things from my brother-in-law, who is six feet tall and weighs 270 pounds, has a very deep voice, is always in the way and always tries not to be.”
Corenswet then went on to talk about how she found her characters while performing with Rachel Brosnahan and Nicola Hoult.
She explained: “Mostly, I draw inspiration from other actors and from James. I feel like I want to live in the world we live in, and so it was when I started working with Rachel that I clearly understood what to do.” who Clark and who Superman was.
“Especially for Superman, a hero is only as interesting or interesting as the nemesis he faces, and so, coming face to face with Nick for the first time, I began to understand who I was. That’s where I started to clarify who I am, because I see so clearly who they are.”
Gunn confirmed that Superman and Lex Luthor did not cross paths at the beginning of the film, but Corenswet’s comments suggest that changes during the film’s events as the story unfolds.
Gunn has created an interesting world for Superman unlike anything we’ve seen before in the movies, and his versions of these characters will be really interesting.
Gunn talked about Lex, saying, “Lex is really kind of a sorcerer in a way. He’s a scientist, but he’s so good at science that I consider him some kind of sorcerer.
Hoult said of the character: “I think the most exciting thing about this Lex was being in James Gunn’s universe. Like you said, so emotionally raw and powerful, but huge in the scope of the world and what it’s creating.
“And I think with that Lex, obviously, is intelligent and ruthless and has to get the better of Superman on some levels because he can’t match him on others.
“But there’s also something about this character, hopefully from my perspective, where even if you maybe don’t agree with his process, there’s an element where you can understand on some levels where he’s coming from and because maybe what he is pushing as his ideology is maybe better for humanity.”
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.
“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
“It’s set in a world very different from ours and very far from the DCEU. Heroes have existed for centuries and we’ll see how that has influenced the history of this world and shaped the DCU.”
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
