The Art of Storytelling published an interesting video about how the Earth affects the Star Wars universe.
The video highlights how the Skyriver galaxy connects with Earth’s Milky Way in an artificial way, how the characters are actually human despite descriptions to the contrary, and how aspects of the real world have leaked into the franchise.
It explains: “Many have objected to the heavy-handed messages in new Star Wars productions, which at times seem overtly political. Proximity to contemporary American life collapses the sense of distance necessary for mythology and fantasy.”
It also acknowledges that many fans “have responded positively to ‘Star Wars’ productions that are more rooted in realism and that deal with a morally ambiguous real world, issues such as corruption, bureaucracy, political dissent and class warfare.”
Andor is then used as an example of how it is more based on realism than fantasy. “It is only indirectly tied to the mythology of the Skywalker Saga and does not directly involve Jedi destiny or bloodlines. the Sith, the Force, or anything supernatural.
“Much of the story takes place in a prison that feels more like a plausible dystopian future than an epic Space Opera and, for me, that’s at least proof of concept. That audiences can tolerate the Star Wars universe being a little simpler than it was before.”
