THE Ghostbusters the franchise began in 1984 when the film stars Dan Aykroyd, Harold RamisAND Rick Moranis wrote the first screenplay that brought the beloved Ghostbusters characters to life. Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis played the Manhattan-based paranormal investigators in the 1984 action horror comedy.
They came back for Ghostbusters II in 1989, and delighted fans in the 2021 reboot, Ghostbusters: Afterlifewhere Aykroyd, Murray and Hudson gathered to honor their friend Harold Ramis. They are back again this year for Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empireand while it was a welcome return, it may be the last time they return.
Aykroyd was asked by New York Postwhile promoting his History Channel series The Incredible with Dan Aykroydif he sees himself returning to the Ghostbusters films in the future. He replied:
“I don’t see it coming. I don’t see where they would need us to take it forward. They have a completely new cast and they have completely new ideas.
The final episodes of the series took place in Oklahoma and New York City, and starred Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace AND Carrie Coon.
Aykroyd went on to say regarding the direction of the franchise, “I think they’ll probably move forward to take it beyond the originals, which they should.”
While Frozen empire it was not a great success with critics or audiences, director Gil Kenan expressed plans for further films together with the writer-producer Jason Reitmannalthough nothing concrete has been announced.
