Most Hollywood actors have a long list of auditions that didn’t go their way. Usually it’s because they just weren’t right for the role, but not many people can say it went belly up because they accidentally ripped Superman’s suit.
This is the story for the actor Tom Brittneywho says things went wrong when he auditioned James Gunn to play the Man of Steel in Gunn’s next film Superman.
Brittney revealed during his appearance on the Hellish podcast (via SuperHeroHype) that he was one of the actors who tried out for the Superman movie and had the chance to audition in a Superman costume previously worn by Henry Cavill.
She talked about the experience and expressed fear that she had torn it. “It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman costume – it was his real costume.
“Apparently, he was surprised to find that the suit was a little tight. Brittney, who is an inch taller than Cavill, explained: “It takes about half an hour to put on, to get sewn.
“And yes, I think I might have torn it accidentally. I was more muscular than Henry Cavill, that’s the only reason.”
It follows a long line of actors who auditioned in costumes from previous projects. Cavill himself auditioned for the DCEU Superman wearing that Christopher Reeve he wore during his original films.
Cilian Murphyfor which the test was carried out Christopher Nolan’s Film about the Dark Knight, auditions to play Batman Val Kilmer’s Batman forever suit.
It must be a lot of pressure and a great honor to wear an iconic costume like that and then inadvertently leave a tear in it! But it looks like someone was on hand to get him in and out of the suit to repair any damage done, so that’s a relief.
As we all know by now, David Corenswet ended up getting the role of Superman/Clark Kent in James Gunn’s next film, and he’s joined by and Rachel Brosnahan like Lois Lane, as well as Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.
Superman its premiere in American theaters is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
