Smallville star Tom Welling recently talked about the opportunity he had to work with Christopher Reeve when he appeared in the fan-favorite Superman series.
Reeve appeared in one episode of the series and, according to Welling, it was a great experience for Reeve who wanted to work on the show longer than he was allowed to.
Speaking about how it all came together for Reeve’s appearance on the series, Welling said: “I knew three days before. You only get a script every 10 days, and when you get it, you’re shooting it three days later.
“And I remember it was Greg, again, the same guy, and he came on set and said, ‘So, what are you doing this weekend?’ and I was like, “What do you mean?” And I was like, “Great.” [gotta] do a photoshoot,’ Like, Him [goes,] “I think we’ll shoot in the morning on Friday, get on a plane, fly to New York, and shoot Saturday and Sunday in New York.”
“And I thought, ‘Why? I don’t want to go there!’ [Greg says] “Well, we have Chris, and we did [him] for three hours on Saturday,’ and then I thought, ‘Okay… that’s a good idea.'”
Welling didn’t know he would be working alongside Reeve until a few days before their meeting. He shared his experience saying:
“We left and the next day we shot: Chris was only supposed to be there for three hours, and I think he stayed six or seven until his nurse, who had some sort of power of attorney over him, physically.
“I remember her saying: because she didn’t want to leave, she wanted to stay, do the scenes with me, because initially we would just film his part, and then he would leave, and then I would work with someone else and he would film mine he leaves, but he wanted to stay: “If you don’t come with me, I’ll call the police and have you taken out of here.”
“‘And he looked at me and said, ‘They always tell me what to do,’ and he started laughing. Eventually he had to leave, but he really wanted to be there. We had a lot of fun.
It’s really great that Welling had the opportunity to work with Reeve even if only for a short time.
In the episode, Reeve played a brilliant and wealthy scientist named Dr. Virgil Swann who came across a message from Krypton and tracked Clark Kent as a member of the alien race.
