Capcom has released a lot of games lately that I’ve wanted to play, including Marvel vs. Fighting Collection Capcom: Arcade Classics.
This is a collection of seven classic games featuring Marvel characters, including the first console version from 1993 The Punisher beat them. Other titles include X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Superheroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroesand the beloved good Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes.
I’ve never played any of these games before, but I felt so much love for them MvC2 that I was excited to experience all of this. Capcom was kind enough to provide me with a PC code for this review, but all thoughts below are my own.
If you want to play this collection, you can purchase it now digitally on Nintendo Switch, PC, and PS4 with a physical version releasing in November and an Xbox One version releasing in 2025. You can pre-order your copy from your favorite stores, including GameStop ( affiliate link).
So, I’ve decided that this review won’t be about the games included, but rather the experience through them Marvel vs. Fighting Collection Capcom: Arcade Classics provides. The games themselves seem to be fun and have legacies of their own that seem to be intact in this collection. So is the collection a good experience?
I want to remind you that I received a PC code and therefore my review will not be a perfect representation of the PS4 or Nintendo Switch versions of Marvel vs. Fighting Collection Capcom: Arcade Classicsbut many points will be the same across the board.
First and foremost, the collection has a unifying user interface and a positive vibe. Whether you go to the Museum, Online Game, or Offline Game, you’ll be greeted by tiles representing each of the titles that you can rotate. Menus appear crisp and clean without any issues.
The games also have training modes that are accessible by pressing Start on the controller from the menu, not in the game. Additionally, you can adjust various gameplay options such as the number of rounds, amount of damage dealt, etc.
You can also adjust video settings like screen ratio (I personally like Full 4:3), edge images, and filters (I think E is my favorite) to make the game look how you think it should. There’s also a space to change the controller layout. This was very important to me since, for whatever reason, Y and B defaulted to light attacks with X and A as medium attacks and I personally prefer those swapped on an Xbox controller.
Everything that has been added to this collection looks and even looks great. There is one thing that bothers me even though it probably shouldn’t. In the PC version, the iconography is based on Xbox 360.
Whether I’m on the Steam Deck or on the desktop with an Xbox Series Controller, the buttons are depicted using Xbox 360 images. That means they’re the brightly colored A, B, X, Y buttons, the oval with a triangle for Start , the oval with an opposite triangle for Back, etc.
This honestly makes it Marvel vs. Fighting Collection Capcom: Arcade Classics I feel extremely dated. It just came out! Why doesn’t he use the updated iconography?
Another thing that bothers me a bit is that even when I set it to Full Screen in Window, it seems to block some system hotkeys. For example, I couldn’t use hotkeys to take the screenshot above while I was focused on the game. I had to click on my second monitor’s desktop to be able to do this. Also, I can’t use the Windows key to open the Start menu. It’s not inherently a deal breaker, but it’s an annoyance at times.
Outside of the iconography, I can’t find any faults Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. The games are snappy, use rollback netcode for online play, and run well on the two machines I tested it on. If you are already a fan of these games or want to try these classic titles, I would recommend this collection and the MSRP is only $49.99.
