A couple of weeks ago Ridley Scott revealed that he is looking to continue the Gladiator franchise with a third film and which has already “lit the fuse” for the next chapter of its historical epic.
Scott has now offered an update on that as he addresses Total Film, saying he’s already started writing: “I’ve got eight pages already. I’ve got the beginnings of a really good imprint.”
He added: “If there is a Gladiator 3I don’t think you’d ever go back to the arena again. But I had to get back to the arena…”
Scott also spoke about the legacy of Gladiator, sharing, “The first film really touched the imagination in a way I didn’t expect.
“Because when they heard that Ridley was making a Roman epic – a sword, spear and sandal movie – there was a lot of giggling. Because up until that point they had always been very old-fashioned Hollywood. And I knew what to do.”
Scott continued: “And from that, I, in a funny way, modernized the epic-roman kind of movie. So, you know, it spawns a lot more guys in leather skirts and stuff like that.”
Scott has already talked about it too Gladiator II star Paolo Mescal as the actor confirmed that the director has already spoken to him about the idea.
Mescal previously said: “Yes, Ridley told me about it, but only yesterday! So I’m waiting to see what happens, but I’m interested, obviously. But we can’t rush anything. The story is to hold together.”
Now obviously a third Gladiator film will only be made if the next sequel is successful at the box office. There seems to be a lot of excitement about Gladiator IIso I’m pretty confident that the movie will make money.
The story for Gladiator II takes place years after Massimo gave his life, overturning the leadership of a decadent and corrupt society. The sequel focuses on Lucius, son of Lucilla and grandson of Commodus, son of the Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who killed his father and seized the throne.
Commodus met his downfall in the gladiatorial arena against Maximus, who despite being mortally wounded, defeated the emperor before dying to be reunited with his family. Maximus had saved Lucius and his mother, leaving a lasting impact on the boy.
It is explained that “decades have passed and Lucius has come of age away from his mother. When he was still a child, Lucilla sent him to the northern coast of Africa, to a region called Numidia which was (at that time) just outside the reach of the Roman Empire.
“Gladiator II begins with Lucius of Mescal living a peaceful life with his wife and son until conquerors from his homeland begin to invade. Scott says: “The film begins with the incursion of the Roman fleet, which arrives from the sea and decimates Numidia. It’s pretty gnarly.
Eventually Lucius finds himself a prisoner and is taken to Rome, where he must fight in the Colosseum. Scott explains how it ends: “The problem is, when he arrives in Rome as a prisoner and has a first round in the arena, he sees his mother, to his shock.”
The film is also the protagonist Connie Nielsen like Lucilla, Denzel Washington like Macrinus, Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla, Joseph Quinn as emperor Geta, e Pedro Pasquale in the role of Marco Acacio.
The synopsis reads: “Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue and revenge set in ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome with an iron fist.
“With anger in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find the strength and honor needed to restore the glory of Rome to its people.”
The film will hit theaters on November 22.
