According to a Hollywood insider Jeff SniederCEO of Warner Bros David Zaslav wants James GunnThe DCU version of Batman will hit the big screen sooner rather than later in an effort to better compete with Marvel Studios.
The report explains that one idea being considered is that for The Batman star Robert Pattinson to become the DCU version of the Dark Knight after the sequel’s release.
This seems ridiculous to me because Pattinson’s Batman clearly doesn’t fit into the DC world that James Gunn is building. It will have a very different atmosphere than what we’ve seen The Batman and what we are seeing The Penguin series.
Even if this is just a rumor, and this is something that could only be discussed at this time… why is this conversation even happening behind the scenes?
Gunn has already announced a Batman: The Brave and the Bold movie with Andy Muschietti he was supposed to direct, and that was the film that would introduce the new DCU version of Batman.
However, if Zaslav is so concerned about bringing Batman to the big screen as soon as possible, perhaps there are some problems behind the scenes with Brave and bold. Gunn and Peter Safran have a plan in place for Batman, so if these conversations are happening, leadership will obviously question those plans.
But then there was that comment from Gunn when he said that the now-scrapped Arkham Asylum TV series would become part of the DCU, which baffled everyone because it was supposed to take place in the same world as The Batman.
When asked for further clarification, Gunn said: “Yes. We love Matt as a director and producer, so he will be producing stories in both his The Batman universe and the DCU.
The project is inspired by Grant Morrisonis the series of the famous Batman comics and will focus on Bruce Wayne’s relationship with his biological son, Damian Wayne. Batman: The Brave and the Bold it is said to be one of Gunn and Safran’s favorite projects.
Speaking previously about this project, Gunn said: “So this is the introduction of Batman DCU, Bruce Wayne, and also the introduction of our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch, murderous assassin, who he unintentionally picks up, who is the real son of Batman that he didn’t know existed for the first 8-10 years of his life, and brings him into his life and that’s a story. It’s kind of a very strange father-son story between the two of them.”
I’m not sure what to make of all this. But, if what Snieder says is true, then there are some strange things going on behind the scenes and WB and DC Studios are still trying to figure some things out.
