Judd Apatow It is set to direct Cola Warsa Coca-Cola vs Pepsi film which is also produced by Steven Spielberg through his Amblin Entertainment.

Sony Pictures bought the project last year for more than $1 million in pitch money. It will tell the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-old reign as the world’s number one cola.

This led to the so-called “Cola Wars” in the mid-1980s, a fierce rivalry between PepsiCo and The Coca-Cola Company, two of the largest soft drink makers in the world.

The battle intensified when Pepsi launched its aggressive “Pepsi Challenge” marketing campaign in the late 1970s, a blind taste test in which participants consistently chose Pepsi over Coke. This helped position Pepsi as the choice of the younger generation, gaining market share and challenging Coke’s dominance.

Coca-Cola responded by launching its ill-fated “New Coke” in 1985, an attempt to reformulate its iconic beverage to better compete with the sweeter-tasting Pepsi. However, the move was met with public outrage, leading to the original formula’s quick reintroduction as “Coca-Cola Classic.”

The rivalry extended beyond taste tests and product reformulations, as both companies invested millions in advertising, using celebrity endorsements, catchy slogans and sponsorships to outdo each other.

Pepsi capitalized on the popularity of stars like Michael Jackson, while Coca-Cola capitalized on its association with tradition and nostalgia. The Cola Wars also saw each brand innovate with new product lines, like Diet Coke and Pepsi Free, to meet changing consumer preferences.

Despite all this, Coca-Cola has maintained its dominant position in the market, while Pepsi has secured a strong position as a younger alternative, cementing their ongoing rivalry in pop culture.

The pitch for Cola Wars was written by Jason Schuman AND Good Queen. Shuman is the co-creator/writer of Apple Acapulco series and was an executive producer for HBO Winning timeHe was also the author of Car 2 AND Car 3 for Pixar.

The project is in the early stages of development, so there is still a long way to go, but there is an interesting and fun story to tell.
