Apple Introduces iPhone 16, the First Smartphone Designed for AI

Apple has launched the iPhone 16, the first generation of its phones specifically designed for generative AI.

The iPhone 16 is “Built for Apple Intelligence. Turbocharged with the new A18 chip. Featuring all-new Camera Control. All-new 48MP Fusion camera. Macro photography. Ultra-durable third-generation Ceramic Shield. Action button. Big boost in battery life. Five vibrant colors.”

The A18 chip was built to handle the extra power needed to process AI features, and is said to be up to 30 percent faster than the chip in the iPhone 15.

Advanced camera technology includes a 48-megapixel camera, an ultra-wide camera, and a redesigned Photos app with AI-powered features.

As for AI, Apple has been doing it for years with Siri, but this new push revolves around generative AI they call “Apple Intelligence,” a more sophisticated AI that creates new content based on large sets of data.

iPhone 16 includes improved Siri built with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. These tools let you rewrite, correct, and summarize text across iPhone apps; and the new Image Playground (which will be available as a separate app and as a feature in other apps like Messages), which lets users create “playful” generative-AI images.

Apple Intelligence will also let you create custom emoji by typing a text prompt and summarize email messages. Apple Intelligence beta features will be available in a software update in October,

The iPhone 16 model will start at $799 (with a 6.1-inch display) and the 16 Plus (6.7-inch display) at $899, both with 128 gigabytes of storage. They will be available starting September 20, 2024.
