When Steele confided in Ferrell that she was going through a gender transition, he suggested they take a road trip so they could traverse the uncharted territory together.
The full synopsis reads:
“3 years ago, Will Ferrell was filming a movie when he received a truly startling email: his dear friend of nearly 30 years was coming out to him as a trans woman. In this intimate, honest and heartfelt documentary, Will and Harper hit the road together to process this new phase of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country she loves, this time as herself. Over 16 days, these two drive from New York to Los Angeles, visiting places that are meaningful to them, to their friendship and to America. Through laughter, tears and a lot of Pringles, they push themselves beyond their comfort zones as they reexamine their relationships to these spaces and to each other in this new light.”
The film is directed by My friend Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar, Strays, New girl), and debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews. Netflix will release Will and Harper in select U.S. theaters on September 13, then streaming on Netflix beginning September 27.
