Director Author: Todd Phillips is about to release the sequel of his film JokerThe movie, Joker: Madness for Twosees the return of Arthur Fleck (actress), who is now in an asylum awaiting trial after the crimes committed in the last film. In this new story, he meets Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga), and the whole thing is kind of a dark, twisted musical. Phillips wrote the screenplay with Scott SilverHowever, he talks about how the film’s stars were important collaborators in the rewriting process.
In a recent interview with Variety, Phillips said his goal in making the sequel was to “look like it was made by crazy people. The inmates run the asylum.” The director apparently got his wish in part from his lead star Joaquin Phoenix, who reportedly threw out the script on a whim and reunited with Phillips and co-star Lady Gaga in his trailer to rewrite entire scenes from scratch.
Gaga recently told Vanity Fair, “We would meet up a lot in Joaquin’s trailer and sometimes we would tear up the script and start all over again. It was a really beautiful, liberating process.”
Phillips confirmed Gaga’s story, explaining:
“My joke about Joaquin is that he’s the tunnel at the end of the light. You’re like, ‘OK, this scene works, let’s just go shoot it.’ And Joaquin says, ‘No, no, no, let’s just have a quick meeting about it,’ and three hours have passed and you’re writing it down on a napkin. The great thing about Lady Gaga is that she really holds her own both off-camera when we’re in the trailer tearing things apart, which she probably learned the night before, and on-camera. That was no small feat.”
“She gets in touch with very powerful people,” Phillips later observed of his leading lady. “I mean, Bradley Cooperto be in front of him right from the gate. To be in front of Adam Driver [in House of Gucci]who’s a beast, and Joaquin who’s a beast. She’s in—she’s in all the way.”
Warner Bros. is ready to release Joker: Madness for Two in theaters from October 4th.
