As THE CROW Smashes Box Office, Director Responds to Fan Backlash

As expected, the new adaptation of The Crow It was a box office flop, grossing just $4.6 million on its opening weekend, and received a ton of negative reviews.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director Rupert Sanders responded to the fan backlash, saying, “I think a lot of people are very active online and not so active in real life. Get out there and do something and you’ll have less time to throw stones.”

The director added: “I think it would be great for people to know that this is a reimagining, completely different from the original, and that the original is still there. I didn’t record it on anyone’s VHS.

“You can still go see that movie, and I hope that this movie resonates with people who loved it as teenagers. This is my version of that text. It was my adaptation of James’ graphic novel, which I loved.”

I understand what you mean, but at the same time the director’s adaptation of the source material, his “vision of that text”, was simply not good.

As for telling fans to go out and do something, I’m a fan of the comics and the original movie, and I’m a very active outdoorsy guy, so that argument doesn’t work. In any case, telling angry fans to go touch the grass doesn’t seem like the best way to win them over.

Instead of blaming the fans, the director should at least accept the constructive criticism contained in many reviews from critics and fans and learn from it, so that his next film will be better.
