It seems that Joker: Madness for Two It will be the last film that Author: Todd Phillips AND actress do in the franchise. Don’t expect a third film to be made.
In a recent interview with Variety, Phillips explained, “It was fun to play in this kind of sandbox for two movies, but I think we said what we wanted to say in this world.”
I think he said that about the first movie, though. They didn’t originally plan on making a sequel, and now we have one coming. But maybe this time they’ll stick to their guns and not make a third movie, even if the sequel makes another billion dollars.
Joker: Madness for Two is set a few years after the first film, while Arthur Fleck is a patient at Arkham Asylum, where he risks the death penalty. It is here that he meets and falls in love with a music therapist and patient named Lee, who is Lady Gagaby Harley Quinn.
The characters bond over their shared disappointments, and since the film is a musical, they will sing about their thoughts and feelings.
Phillips also offered some insight into the film’s musical details, saying, “Most of the music in the movie is really just dialogue. It’s just Arthur not having the words to say what he wants to say, so he sings them.
“I don’t want people to think it’s like In the Heights, where the lady at the grocery store starts singing and then goes out into the street, while the police are dancing.”
Phoenix has previously spoken about what inspired him to make the sequel, saying, “It’s the only way I can make a movie. If it doesn’t feel dangerous, if there’s no good chance it’s going to fail spectacularly, then… what’s the point?”
Phillips added: “That was literally why I did it. The only reason Joaquin would do a sequel is if it scared him. One thing that really excited him about the first movie was this fear, every day, this nauseating fear of, ‘What the fuck are we doing?’
“He didn’t want it to be easy. And he wanted to feel scared this time too. He’s like, ‘Well, if I’m going to do this, I just want to feel like it can’t work.'”
Phillips goes on to say that he doesn’t see this film as a sequel: “I don’t consider it a sequel. Hangover 2 it was a sequel. A sequel is more or less the same thing, only bigger.
“Obviously [Folie À Deux] It’s a sequel, but it felt like we were making something completely different. It’s something much more different, both tonally and intrinsically.
“The first one subverted expectations of what it was. So how do you do it again? I always said, in the beginning, that the film should feel like it was made by crazy people. Like the inmates were running the asylum.
“It feels like a really big swing. And you just say, ‘Well, screw it. Why not? What are we all doing here if not to do this?'”
The film also stars Zazie Beetz like Sophie Dumond, with Catherine Keener, Jacob LoflandAND Dr Brendan Gleeson who will play undisclosed characters.
