The Batman spin-off series The penguin is trying to expand the universe that Mattia Reeves created and will also tell a story that leads to the events of Batman: Part II.
The series was developed by the showrunner Lauren LeFrancand in a recent interview with Total Film, she talked about the show and said she used it as an opportunity to explore interesting and complex female characters in the Batman world.
LaFranc explains: “Very few women have been able to write this kind of film or television show. I think my perspective on Oz, and on masculinity in general, is different. And that also made me want to surround him with really interesting and complicated women.”
One of these characters is Carmine’s daughter, Sofia, known as the Hanged Man, played by Christin MiliotiOnce freed from Arkham Asylum, she will try in every way to gain power.
She continues, “In traditional crime dramas, women are rarely as interesting as men. So I took this opportunity to see what had been done before me, to respect and honor the genre and then also evolve it.”
There are so many interesting characters to interact with in the Batman universe, and it will be interesting to see how they interact with Sofia and how her story arc develops.
Colin Farrell reprises his role as Oswald Cobb who is making his moves to take over Gotham’s criminal enterprise. The trailer gives an exciting look at what’s in store for this show, and it looks like it’s going to be a great detective series!
The eight-episode Penguin series has been described as a “Scarred-like” which will see the villain’s rise in the criminal underworld of Gotham City. It has also been confirmed that the series will lead directly into the events of Batman: Part Two.
Speaking previously about the film, Farrell said: “I think it’s going to be eight parts for HBO that focus on Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum that was created when Falcone was killed. Matt [Reeves]The original idea was to have the Penguin show start about a week after the Batman movie ended.
“And then, if it works, if the trajectory is interesting enough and if the audience is into it and if we do our job well, we’ll have the second movie: Penguin in the second movie and pick up where the HBO series ends.”
He said in another interview: “It’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark, and really heavy, I think, he was certainly doing that.”
Speaking about the story, he said: “It’s a man’s ascension to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or status. And the death of Carmine Falcone at the end of the film leaves this void in Gotham to fill.
“And so there are various people trying to grab that power and this is Oswald’s journey, trying to get to the top, through extraordinary obstacles and it’s super dark. Lauren LeFranc has written a really twisted eight hours of television.”
The stars of the series Christin Miliotiwho plays the female lead Sofia Falcone, and Happy Rhenzywho plays a teenager who Penguin befriends and becomes his driver. The rest of the cast includes Michael Kelly (House of Cards, Jack Ryan), Shohreh Aghdashloo’s Diary (The Expanse, House of Sand and Fog) AND Deirdre O’Connell (External range) have joined the DC series.
LeFranc previously said: “I’ve long been a fan of the world of The Batmanand Matt’s film is a powerful and bold entry into the canon.
“I’m thrilled and honored to continue telling stories set in the dirty underworld of Gotham City, and what better excuse to bring out my evil side than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot?
“I’m thrilled to be working with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners and HBO Max as we work to bring this story to the screen.”
The series will debut on September 19.
