Netflix has given the green light to the animated series Ghostbusters series that they first announced in 2022. The streamer has taken on Elliott Kalanwriter on The daily show AND Mysterious Science Theater 3000as writer, showrunner and executive producer of the series.
The series was initially reported to be in development at the streamer in June 2022. Exact plot details are still under wraps, but sources say the 3D animated series will be in line with the recent Ghostbusters movie.
As previously reported, the series is produced by Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. on board as executive producers.
Reitman and Kenan recently co-wrote the live-action feature films Ghostbusters: Beyond AND Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empirewith Reitman directing the former and Kenan directing the latter. The series will be produced by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., which is based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
This is now the third Ghostbusters animated series in the history of the franchise. Previously, The Real Ghostbusters aired for 140 episodes, mostly on ABC and in syndication, from 1986 to 1991.
It continued the adventures of the characters from the original film. It was followed by Extreme Ghostbusterswhich ran for 40 episodes in syndication. That show featured a mostly new cast of characters, although the team was led by Egon Spengler.
