HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola has ‘mixed feelings’ about the first films, but thinks THE CROOKED MAN is the best

Creator of Hellboy Mike Mignola he recently talked about his new upcoming film Hellboy: The Crooked Mana project he was involved in throughout the process.

He wrote the screenplay for the film with Golden Christopherand it’s a project he’s really enjoyed being a part of. He hasn’t been as involved in previous film projects as he has been in this one.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Mignola explained: “I would often be late to projects where someone else had already put the pieces together in a way that didn’t quite work.

“And this time I had the chance to say: ‘We will do The Crooked Manwe’re going to stick to that story. We need to add a little bit of backstory. So we borrowed it from another story, so we didn’t have to invent new things.”

He continued, “We basically just put two different Hellboy stories together. Just a little bit of one and then we tried to stick as closely to The Crooked Man as possible, because not only is that my favorite story, but it has most of my favorite Hellboy moments. So the idea of trying to bring that stuff to the screen was really exciting.”

Mignola went on to talk about the previous Hellboy films and admits to having mixed feelings about them: “Each one was a very different experience.

“But as someone who’s had mixed feelings about previous films, the one lesson I’ve learned is that if I can get in at the beginning, and at some point you know you’re going to lose – I mean you’re never in control, but you feel like you’re in control at the beginning and then you hope that someone doesn’t dismantle the thing you’ve built. It happens.”

The Crooked Man was directed by Crank helmsman Brian Taylorand Mignola spoke about working with him on the film, saying, “When we first talked, Brian said, ‘Let’s just go back to the way the real story was written. ‘ So you think you might be in good company when that happens.”

Mignola goes on to say that he is very pleased with how the new film turned out: “Yes, more than any other film and I know in other films there have been moments where I was like, ‘Oh, cool, it’s the comic book.’ But this thing was very comical.

“This is the only movie where I wasn’t on set at all, but it’s also the only movie where I saw the dailies every day, so it was about a day before they were shooting.

“Almost every day it was like, ‘Oh my god, that looks like this, that looks like this. Oh my god, they used the same angle for that shot.’ It was really amazing to see your work come to life.”

Of all the Hellboy movies that have been made, Mignola obviously believes that The Crooked Man he’s the best.

The story is based on the comic book of the same name and in that story Hellboy teams up with a rookie BPRD agent named Tom Ferrell and they find themselves stranded in the Appalachian countryside in the 1950s.

“There, they discover a small community infested with witches, led by a local devil with a disturbing connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.” The story will “expand the world of Hellboy through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.”

I can’t wait to see how this movie turns out!
