Thanks to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power co-showrunner, Mr. J.D. PayneWe have new information to share with you regarding Season 2 and the Dark Lord Sauron story arc.
Speaking to Collider, Payne said: “Remember, in season one, things didn’t end exactly as he hoped; Galadriel kicked him out and he was left with basically nothing.
“She has the three rings. He has no friends, no army, no allies, no weapons, basically no resources, except his cunning. The first season was all about the heroes and setting the table with Galadriel, with the Dwarves, with Númenor and with the people of the South.
“Season two will be all about the bad guys, and especially Sauron. We’ll see him use deception, manipulation, lies, coercion, cunning to start setting the chess pieces in motion.
“He’ll go to this person here and pit this group against that group there and start using people’s innate trust, distrust and fears against them to start creating situations that are all win-win for him.”
I like that season 2 will explore Sauron’s origin in depth. The character is played by Charles Vicker and the next chapter of the story will tell the story of the rise of Sauron.
Showman Patrick McQuaid has previously spoken about Sauron’s history, saying: “If I had to choose one reason to make this series and set it in this era of mythology, it would be that.
“From the first minute, we talked about Milton lost paradiseWalter White and Tony Soprano, and how Sauron has the potential to be like these great hero-villains, where hero means protagonist. That’s the great story that’s not told on the screen.”
McKay continued: “He was hiding in our story. The opportunity now with season two is: The audience is in on the scam. We know who he is. We have a good idea of what he wants.
“The fun is watching other people get caught in the web. As the season unfolds, the plan begins. One hammer after another starts to fall until, in the last two episodes, you realize the level and the extent of how evil he is and how deeply he’s strategized this whole thing.”
He goes on to explain: “All our stories are starting to become one story, and that one story is how Sauron’s resurgence touches everyone and threatens the entire world.”
Vickers also spoke about his character, saying: “I was so excited to get to this point in the story, because this is the canon of this time period. You have Sauron and Celebrimbor working together, creating rings.
“Everything Sauron does is to serve other people, to please someone else. In the same way that the whole Halbrand thing was for Galadriel, this new look is for Celebrimbor.
“This is the best way to make him do what he wants: create a bunch of rings that will dominate all the others.”
The series is set “thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Hobbit AND The Lord of the Ringsand will take viewers back to a time when great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the thinnest thread, and the greatest villain Tolkien had ever created threatened to plunge the entire world into darkness.
“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows a cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth.
“From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the Elven capital of Lindon, to the extraordinary island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest corners of the map, these kingdoms and characters will leave a legacy that will live on long after they are gone.”
In season two, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without an army or allies, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.
“Building on the epic scope and ambition of the first season, Amazon’s second season The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power immerses even its most beloved and vulnerable characters in a growing tide of darkness, challenging each of them to find their place in a world increasingly on the brink of destruction.
“Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are tested and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good fight ever more bravely to hold on to what matters most to them… themselves.”
The Rings of Power Season 2 will debut on Prime Video on August 29.
