I’m pretty excited about the next video game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle as it looks like it will actually tell a great story of Indiana Jones adventures. From what I’ve seen, it seems to have the same classic feel as the original trilogy, which makes me happy.
The game director, Jerk Gustafssonrecently talked about the game shedding light on what they hoped to achieve with the project and stating that it is “the closest” to the films Raiders of the Lost Ark AND The Last Crusade.
Speaking to Xbox Wire, Gustafsson explained: “We spent countless hours just reviewing the films, especially the two films closest to the game, which are Raiders of the Lost Ark AND the last crusade.”
The directors of Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny I probably should have done the same thing. He went on to talk about MachineGames’ “invaluable” collaboration with Lucasfilm Games while working on The Great Circle, calling it a “cave of knowledge” about Indy.
Production director John Jennings he added that it was “awesome” to have access to “people who have worked with the Indiana Jones property for decades.”
He added, “Having their input — I mean, some of these people know everything that has been written about Indy — and having them available to bounce ideas off and get some of their input has been extremely, extremely valuable.
“We were able to get access to some of the Lucasfilm archives as well, which for Indy fans was a dream come true, to have access to some of these things that maybe not as many people have seen.”
So, it makes sense why The Great Circle is “closest” to Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Not only is the story set between the two films, but the creative team did extensive research to ensure they were telling another great story that was in keeping with the quality of the previous films.
This is a first-person title set in 1937, “sinister forces are scouring the globe in search of the secret of an ancient power connected to the Great Circle, and only one person can stop them: Indiana Jones.”
Director Todd Howard has been trying to make it happen for over a decade. During a previous interview, he explained: “I’m a big fan of Indiana Jones. He can be brought into video games in a unique way. The game is obviously: you’re exploring things. It’s about him. So if you’re playing the game, how do you think you’re doing actually playing instead of just watching? […] We’ll talk about it next year.”
Bethesda’s head of publishing, Pete Hineshe previously discussed the project, saying: “Todd might be the biggest Indiana Jones fan on the planet. I’m not exaggerating one bit.
“Everyone who saw the pitch immediately said, ‘oh my God, I have to play that game now.’ It’s going to be fantastic and we think the reaction to the announcement will be fantastic.”
The game is scheduled to be released this year, 2024. I hope the game turns out to be as great as it sounds!
