With Bad Boys: Ride or Die having strong box office success, Sony Pictures is trying to stay in business with Will Smithand started a new project.
Smith will star in a sci-fi thriller titled Resistorwhich is based on the book Influx by author Daniel Suarez. The story is a cyberthriller that imagines a world where decades of technological advances have been suppressed in an attempt to prevent disruptive change.
The book’s description reads: “Are smartphones really humanity’s most significant innovation since the Moon landings? Or can something else explain why the bold visions of the 20th century – nuclear fusion, genetic enhancements, artificial intelligence, cures for common diseases, the extension of human life, and a host of other advances capable of change the world – have they remained out of our reach? Why hasn’t the high-tech future that seemed imminent in the 1960s arrived?
“Maybe it has arrived… but only for a select few. Particle physicist Jon Grady is thrilled when his team realizes what they’ve been working on for years: a device that can reflect gravity.
“Their research will revolutionize the field of physics: the crowning achievement of a career. Grady expects widespread acclaim from his entire team. The Nobel. Instead, his laboratory is blocked by a shadowy organization whose mission is to prevent at all costs the social upheaval that sudden technological advances bring.
“This Bureau of Technology Control uses the advanced technologies they have collected over the decades to accomplish their mission.
“They live in our future. Presented with the opportunity to join the BTC and improve their technology in secret, Grady hesitates and is instead thrown into a nightmarish high-tech prison built to contain wayward geniuses like himself.
“With so many great intellects confined together, can Grady and his fellow prisoners conceive of a way to bring humanity out of its artificial dark ages?
“And when they do, will it be possible to defeat an enemy that has a technological advantage half a century in the making?”
The film’s screenplay was written by Zak Olkewiczwith Eric Singer writing the last draft. Escape Artists has been working for some time to get this film project off the ground, “but after receiving a script from Singer last month that wowed executives, the studio and producers saw this as a perfect star vehicle for Smith “.
Sony Pictures moved quickly with the project to stay in business with Smith before he was cast in another film.
Resistor will be produced Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch AND Tony Shaw of Escape Artists.
