Peacock has released the full director’s trailer Roland EmmerichThe epic gladiator drama series Those who are about to die. The series explores the corrupt world of spectacle-based gladiatorial competitions.
The scope of the series seems huge and the trailer shows off some large-scale action sequences!
The series is the protagonist Anthony Hopkins and the story dives into “a side of ancient Rome never before told: the dirty business of entertaining the masses, giving the crowd what they want most… blood and sport.”
The series introduces “a collection of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire who collide at the explosive intersection of sports, politics and dynasties.”
Emmerich previously spoke about the film, saying: “I’ve always been fascinated by the history of the Roman Empire. Many things still seem relevant to our society today – from the intertwining of politics and sports to the disciplines of competition, which haven’t changed much over the last 2000 years.”
He added: “The most thrilling spectacles for the masses still involve two men in an arena, beating each other up, and today’s chariots are called race cars whose drivers keep crashing and often pay with their lives.”
The director spoke about his goal for the series, saying: “When my partners Gianni Nunnari and Harald Kloser put Daniel Mannix’s Those who are about to die on my reading list, I was immediately hooked.
“My goal was to create a show that explored a side of Rome that had never been told before: the dirty work of entertaining the masses, giving the crowd what they want most… blood and sport. Let the games begin.”
Hopkins is joined in the series by Ivan Rheon (game of Thrones), Sara Martins, Tom Hughes (A discovery of the witches), Jojo Macari (Morbius), Moe Hashim, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, Rupert Penry-Jones, Gabriella Pessione, Dimitri Leonidas, Emilio Sakraya, David Wurawa, Pepe Barroso, Gonçalo Almeida, Eneko SagardoyAND Romana Maggiora Vergano.
Emmerich directed five of the ten episodes in Those who are about to die with Marco Kreuzpainter (Bodies, the Lazarus project) directing the other five.
Peacock has confirmed that all ten episodes of Those who are about to die will premiere on July 18.
