The showrunners of THE LAST OF US explain that the series will need 3 more seasons to tell the complete story

The last of us showrunner of the series Craig Mazin AND Neil Druckmann recently talked about the series and what we can expect from it as the story continues to unfold.

During an interview with Deadline, it was revealed that the second season of the series will only consist of seven episodes. But the long-term plan is to tell the complete story over the course of three more seasons.

So, in total, if The last of us continues to be successful with audiences, it will most likely end up being a four-season show.

The first season of the series covered the events of the first game, but there is so much content in the sequel that they are trying to split it into additional seasons.

Mazon explained: “The story material we got from Part II of the game is much more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the beginning was figure out how to tell that story across seasons.

“When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we presented it, this season, the national breakpoint seemed to come after seven episodes.”

Mazin went on to talk about the decision to proceed by saying, “We don’t think we’ll be able to tell the story even in two seasons.” [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and going down interesting paths, which we did a little bit in season one as well.

“We think that almost certainly – as long as people continue to watch and we can continue to make more television – season three will be significantly bigger. And in fact, the story could require a fourth season.”

Mazin added: “One thing is absolutely certain, I don’t see how we could tell the story that remains after the completion of the second season in another season.”

Mazin then talks about the seven-episode second season, saying, “We just want to put people’s minds at ease that the idea that this upcoming season is going to be a little bit shorter than the first is not because we’re spending less time telling it “. stories, it’s because we want to take more time.

“The story we’re telling is a lot bigger than the first season, there’s just a lot more to do, it’s a lot harder to produce but we want each episode to feel like a blockbuster in its own right, to be honest with you. “

One thing Mazin and Dunkman won’t do is go beyond the source material. Mazin added: “As a fan, I’m thrilled that there could be a third Last of Us game. As the co-creator of this television show, there’s no world where I would want our show to go beyond the source material that people have in the world.

“Our show, as people on HBO know it, will cover material from the second game and then quite a bit of material relevant to that story but, as I said, it wanders down interesting new paths, unseen stories that have been told within. the context of the game material.”

Druckman added: “Our focus is two games. As Craig said, there’s quite a bit of material that we’re taking our time with, and we’re looking at each piece individually to make sure that it has its own story arc, its own journey that the characters take, but there’s a greater plan that ties all the seasons together.

Mazin and Druckmann also reveal that they have mapped out the entire TV series. Mazin said: “Basically, we have a pretty good idea of how it will work.

“I think what naturally happens when you really start to focus on a season and where that natural stopping point should occur at that time, who knows? It’s a good theory, once put into practice, who knows?”

He goes on to say, “We’re committed to giving people great seasons and story arcs, and HBO has been great at that. They let us choose that natural place. Instead of having to figure out how to create the seasons around an artificial number, we create the length of the seasons around the story and how we tell it.”

Druckmann also wants fans to know that there is no padding in the show, saying, “Our process was to outline multiple seasons, then we did a deep dive on season two. To echo what Craig says, there’s no padding.” It’s no padding, everything in there is intentional.

“There’s always a goal in mind that we’re moving towards, we never digress for the sake of rambling, it’s always to say something bigger for these characters and themes.”

Season 2 of The Last of Us is currently in production and, speaking about his time directing, Mazon said: “I love making the show. I just finished my first full week directing episode 1 of season 2 and I couldn’t be happier or more excited. The scale of this thing is sometimes absolutely enormous. And season three promises to be just as big, if not bigger.”

He added: “The first week of filming any new season of any show is inherently difficult because you’re going back to work. You need to shake off the rust a little. We’re working with new actors playing new characters, we’re discovering new things, and this week went as I could have imagined.

“We got to work with some of the new cast; they are exceptional. And the material we shot and the new elements we included are fantastic. I’m just incredibly optimistic about what we’re doing here, and it’s just getting started. I think we are ready to deliver something special. Let’s hope things go like this.”

Pedro Pasquale AND Beautiful Ramsey are back as Joel and Ellie and also includes the returning cast Gabriele Luna like Tommy, and Rutina Wesley like Mary.

The new cast includes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Mercede like Dina, The young Mazino like Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle in the role of Nora, Spencer Lord like Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Catherine O’Hara also guest stars.

The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization was destroyed by a deadly virus. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone to the Fireflies, a cure-seeking organization.

What begins as a small job soon becomes a brutal and harrowing journey, as both must cross the United States and depend on each other for survival.

The second season will be released in 2025.
