Matthew Vaughn recently spoke to Empire and opened up about the harsh negative reviews critics have unleashed Argyle.
When asked if the reviews disappointed him, he said: “Fuck yes. We had done some test screenings that went extraordinarily well. The premiere was a really fun night and it was like going back to the past Rip days when there was so much excitement.
He went on to explain, “And I started drinking the Kool-Aid. It’s a fun, enjoyable movie, or at least I thought it was a fun, enjoyable movie. We didn’t make it Citizen Kanebut damn, then the reviews came out and I was like, ‘Wait, what did I do to offend these people?’”
He continued: “They were vitriolic. I’m by no means saying the movie is perfect, but I didn’t think it was offensive. This took me by surprise.
Vaughn continued, “I also went to the movies because I thought, ‘Maybe I’ve lost my mind now.’ He shook me. I’m really scratching my head, because you can’t ignore it. It was not so [just] some negative reviews.”
I thought the movie was very funny! It was unique, it was original, it played out like a wild and crazy live-action cartoon that didn’t take itself too seriously. The film knew exactly what it was about and didn’t pretend to be anything else. It was a stupid and fun action movie!
The film is not on Apple TV+ and is doing well there, with the director saying: “We are doing very well on streaming. People like it. Nothing would make me happier than making another one.
He added: “I get messages saying, ‘Wow, those reviews were damn harsh!’ The more we can get people to watch Argyle, the more chance we do another one. I’d like to do another one, we’ve planned that.
We’ll just have to wait and see if Vaughn gets to make another movie, though. The film was planned as a big franchise, but given the film’s impact at the box office, there’s a good chance it won’t happen.
Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway in the film, “the reclusive author of a series of best-selling spy novels, whose idea of happiness is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie.
But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books, centering on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate, begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.
Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a spy allergic to cats, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of assassins as the lines between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begin to blur.
The film features a stellar cast that includes Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’HaraAND Samuel L. Jackson.
